I got a set of Hogue Tamer grips for my Smith & Wesson 642 Pro today, $28 delivered from Amazon. Installation was easy and the gun feels so-o-o-o much better in the hand. There is even a little internal gel insert (like running shoes) right where the web of your had would get sore from +P ammo. Range report to follow when I get a chance, and if it shoots as good as it feels I won’t mind giving up that little bit of concealability just one bit.

Yup. They work as advertised and you're really not giving up anything. Wood grips are pretty - but when you get older you'll pay. Trust me - you'll pay.

I already pay... for the wood grips to get rid of the snowtires. It’s a good thing that people have different tastes because mine can be expensive. I do wish I could buy a quality grip that I like for less than $30, but I doubt that I EVER find a way for that to work out short of buying used.

Got back from the range, no pics because my pistol shooting is nothing to write home about. Let's just say I could put all five double-action-only shots from my 642 in the same 8" round target at 10 yards. Most of the time. ;-) As for the new Hogue grips, after about 50 rounds of mostly +P ammo, I wasn't at all uncomfortable, when with the old grips after 10-15 rounds I started to feel the sting. Definitely worth it for me.

I use the Hogue grips on my round-butt Model 13 and love them, those look like they'll be much nicer on the palms than the original J-frame grips are.

I, too love the look of wood but I prefer the feel of synthetic on most of my handguns.

Stay safe.

I like Pachmayr Compacs on the Jframe a bit better than Hogues but the end result is the same.

in the end I usually use a hard grip.

Here's an overlay of the stock grips on the Hogue grips to give you an idea of the change both in how it fills your hand and in concealability.
