This HAS to be a 5.56x45mm AN-94. It absolutely has to be! I'm pretty sure the magazine the guy puts in it is an AK-101 5.56mm magazine, NOT an AK-74 5.45mm magazine. The mag in the video is too straight for it to be 5.45x39mm. It has to be 5.56mm, which means the Russians are making a 5.56x45mm NATO AN-94!!! Not that it really matters for us but it's still pretty cool.

Go to 1:20 in the video, that's where they show the rifle.

To give an example of the magazines.......

Here's the 5.45mm AN-94

Now go back again and look at the AN-94 in the video. Even the ones they were shooting had what appeared to be the same 5.56mm magazine.

Shoot... I don't know man.

I don't really understand your excitement though.

What does this mean for you and me?

That if we COULD buy one, we could pay more for ammo too?

I already said it doesn't mean anything to us. I just think it's cool if it's confirmed to be a 5.56mm. It means that it may be an export variant for other countries.

I just like finding out new developments in the small arms world.

I don't think you get enough of a look at the curve of the mag to know what calibre it's bult for, and TSNIITochmash is too busy trying to keep up with building their orders for the Russians to try to put a 5.56 rifle out to compete with the AR.

Weren't there rumors of a new Russian 6mm cartridge?

I certainly don't feel I got a good enough look to say one way or another.

Edit:

Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks the AN-94 is screaming out to be bullpuped. Look at how close the magazine well is to the rear of the receiver; the length of pull of a bullpup converted AN-94 would be considerably shorter than that of a bullpup converted AK.

It could also alleviate some of the ergonomic complaints.

It says about 1:43 minutes into the video that the rifle is 5.45mm...

And sure, I'll bite--bullpup the thing. You certainly couldn't make it any uglier than it is now.

I got a good look by stopping the video at 1:28

It's a pretty clear shot.
