Several months ago I bought a S&W Highway Patrolman, Model 28-2 (1978) from my favorite pusher at the gunshow. Yesterday I bought it’s more sophisticated brother from the same pusher at the December show in Springfield, Missouri, a Model 27-2, all target, also made in 1978.

It is so much fun seeing the kids together for the holidays!!

My understanding is the M27 has a shorter cylinder. Assuming the top gun in the photo is M27, the cylinder appears shorter.

Is this true? If so, why would S&W make a shorter cylinder?

The Model 27-2 is on top in the photo (target hammer and trigger are wider than the usual hammer and trigger on the Model 28-2) Any difference in appearance must be camera perspective. I just measured both cylinders and they both mike out to 1.625" long. Both cylinders have recessed chambers. I don't know if later Model 27s have chambers that are not recessed, but that would make the cylinder shorter. You need a better historian than I! :)

Thank you for checking. I was scratching my head when I read (ahem...internet post) the M27 had a shorter cylinder.

I got lucky on some research. The Model 27-3 came out in 1982, and that's when they stopped recessing the chambers. So 27-3s and beyond should be shorter.

1982 was also about the time S&W stopped pinning the barrel in place.

I know gun shows are piddling affairs in many states. The Springfield, Missouri shows are not as large as the mother-of-all-shows, the Wanenmacher in Tulsa, but still...

These are my guesses: about 500 tables, 2000+ visitors on Saturday morning. I waited 20 minutes in a cold wind to get inside, and when I left an hour later the line was longer. Both rooms of the Ozarks Empire Fair Grounds Exhibition Hall were full. I saw tables stacked with high capacity magazines higher than my head. (I’m 6’ 5”). Ammo was available at mind-blowing prices. No primers anywhere. Price tags on guns were about the same as in previous shows, but I don’t think there was much bargaining going on. I feel sorry for those who don’t get to go to a real gunshow!

I knew what I wanted, and had discussed the transaction with the dealer before the show, so I was in and out quickly. I might have been able to visit each table in one day, but that was not my goal. If you want to experience a Second Amendment event, consider the next gunshow in Springfield!
