Austin, Tx to Ft. Wayne, In.
Will be headed through Oklahoma, Missouri, and Illinois into Indiana.
I'm aware of what states reciprocate my Tx CHL, but I'd greatly appreciate some insight from regular travelers about having a pistol in your car in these states, as well as duty to inform the officer of weapons in the car.
(I'll also have an NCO sword if that matters)
This is my first road trip while licensed and I planned to keep my model 637 and Glock21 with me in the vehicle and to remain in a micro safe cable locked in the car when I'm not with the vehicle.
I just want to be prepared, safe, and within the law.
Thanks everyone, and Merry Christmas

When I traveled through Illinois from Ohio to Oklahoma, my gun went into a lock box in the trunk. I believe, though you should check more into it, that as long as the weapon cannot be accessed without leaving your vehicle, your are legal.
So if you have it in a lock box, in the cab of car, and can be loaded without leaving the car, you could find yourself with legal problems in Illinois.

Incorrect outdated information. It is now perfectly legal in Illinois for a non-resident to have a concealed and loaded firearm on their person while in their vehicle while traveling through Illinois pursuant to 430 ILCS 66/40:

http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/ilcs3.asp?ActID=3497&ChapterID=40

(430 ILCS 66/40)
Sec. 40. Non-resident license applications.
(e) Nothing in this Act shall prohibit a non-resident from transporting a concealed firearm within his or her vehicle in Illinois, if the concealed firearm remains within his or her vehicle and the non-resident:
(1) is not prohibited from owning or possessing a
firearm under federal law;
(2) is eligible to carry a firearm in public under
the laws of his or her state or territory of residence, as evidenced by the possession of a concealed carry license or permit issued by his or her state of residence, if applicable; and
(3) is not in possession of a license under this Act.
If the non-resident leaves his or her vehicle unattended, he or she shall store the firearm within a locked vehicle or locked container within the vehicle in accordance with subsection (b) of Section 65 of this Act.

No need to put the firearm in the trunk in Illinois as we see from the Illinois State Police:

HOW CAN I LEGALLY TRANSPORT OR
POSSESS AMMUNITION?

Illinois law requires residents possessing ammunition
have a valid FOID card. The location of ammunition
being transported, including ammunition being
transported in loaded magazines, is not regulated if the
firearm is possessed or transported lawfully. However,
when transporting DO NOT store a loaded magazine
in the firearm’s well, clear the chamber and clear a
revolver’s cylinder of ammunition.

Note that non residents of Illinois do not need a FOID Card.

Note also, I was typing while the LT.Commander was posting.;)

After Jan. 1st, you'll be fine armed in the car with valid ccw from another state in IL. Illinois doesn't have duty to inform but this is all something new for LE and all others concerned in IL so try to be patient if questioned about the weapon.

This is correct, but also note if you get OUT of the car armed, you are an instant felon unless you have the IL carry permit for out-of-staters.

The new law is already in effect.

HSO Said:
Carry a copy of the IL State Police opinion with you as a backup.

I second this. Street cops are not usually up to date with legislative changes to the laws. Have a copy of the law with you may keep you from making a trip to the jail so they can "sort it out later"
