Has anyone had any experiance with some of the new poly tipped bullets feeding in old military weapons not designed for hollow points?

My new to me P38 was designed for ball only but I figure something pointy like the new Hornady tipped bullets might work just as good.

my P.1 will eat 115 grain Gold Dots, might be worth a try.

Federal makes a round they label "EFMJ" or "Guard Dog" with a squishy-ball under the jacket
(EFMJ= expanding full metal jacket)
It feeds in my P.1 but I'm not about to try more than a few as I bought a bunch of 124grain+P rounds for other guns.

I haven't tried the Hornady offering in the P.1 either, but it is a decent little round, they call it "Critical Defense" and it is an uncovered squishy-ball in the HP cavity.

corbon powerball will feed in anything that will feed ball. heck, it might feed in some things that won't even feed ball because the polymer ball tip is slippery.

Surprisingly, I have had an issue with Powerball. I have a Keltec P32 that is very reliable, feeding FMJ and Federal HP´s very well. So I decided to try the Powerball and go figure, they do not feed reliably in that pistol.

Cant explain it, but it is a fact never the less!

Also , in the P38, the Corbon ammo might be a little too hot for it.

I second the suggestion for the Hornady Critical Defense or you might also try the Federal EFMJ

I use Hornady CD, and although my gun hasn't had problems feeding other JHP's, they're more rounded at the nose with the filling in the center (whatever it is? Rubber?). It probably helps with feeding a bit.

, are they a bit shorter than a standard round-nose FMJ round?

My P32 runs great, so long as overall length is right. Sometimes feeding gets iffy with shorter rounds, because of the front-to-back room in the magazine. As that can also lead to rimlock, I generally stay with a hot european ball load for the extremely rare occasions I carry the little thing.

Bullets that have a rounded profile and narrow hollowpoint cavity will often feed in such guns. Two such loads in 9mm Luger are the Federal 9BP and Remington "green box," both 115-grain. The Winchester 185-gr. Silvertip is a good .45 Auto load for older, "fussy" guns.

I ran a box of Fiocchi Monoblock through my P-1 without a hiccup. That's my carry ammo for that gun now. I also did the same with a H&K USP9. Although the bullet is light (92gr) and a bit strange (all copper) in 100 rounds, nothing but solid performance in two different guns.

Have you tried any HP ammo in your gun?

I have 2 P1's and a P38 and they all feed and fire JHP's from hand loads to factory, 115 gr to 147. If you don't load your own then try some of the Remington 115gr JHP's either the UMC or the Express as the profile is very similar to ball.

I wish I could Federal 9BP (or 9BPLE) locally. Yeah, the Pow'R'Ball feeds as well as a FMJ on some older mil-surplus guns. Even though my '82 P6 seemed to feed a variety of JHP without issue, I still usually stoked it with PowRBall.

A stated byproduct is that the polymer ball inhibits the JHP from clogging with denim. Here comes the jokes: "it's preclogged!".
