I'm looking for a good sight for my M-4 (on order).

Has anyone used the Holosight (Bushnell)on a shot gun?
I was also looking at the Ultrasight by ATN.

I like the benefits of the Holosight but wonder how well it will do up close (10yds) with the reticle focus being 50-100yds???

The Mepro is a bit pricey but if you all say it's worth the extra money, I could go that route too. I think it's the one Benelli has shown on the M4 on their website.

Looking for good sight for all around use. CQB and longer shots when I get to outdoor range.

I used a first generation Holosite for a couple of years for slug hunting and tried it a few times at the range. It worked well on close range targets and was never out of focus.

Ultimately I went back to a scoped shotgun for hunting because the Holosite seemed a bit fragile, the reticle always seemed either too bright or too dim for conditions and if it was raining it was near useless. There is also a reluctance to depend on a battery operated device in the outdoors partricularly one that required an allen wrench to change batteries.

Patriot, how much experience do you have using just a bead?

Lots of rifleshooters add sights to shotguns when they really aren't advantageous...

Dave..

Using a bead is all that I've done in the past.

I'm looking for a sight to add flexibility to the gun. One that allows fast target acquisition both near and far. I don't want to be limited in it's use. I'm looking for a good all-around sight.

I have an EOTech 511 (similar to the second generation HOLOsight) on an AR. I've not had any problems with the reticle on targets as close as 25 yds (zeroed at 100 yds). I haven't had any problems with the definition of the reticle when I'm looking though it in my apartment at objects less than 10 yds. The only shortcoming to the EOTech (at least the 511) is that when you turn it on, the brightness of the reticle is automatically set at the middle of the brightness range. So, you have to adjust it to the conditions you are in. You can improve the clarity and sharpness of the reticle by lowering hte brightness to the lowest setting that you can comfortably see for the condition. I can't see why a holo-type or red dot sight wouldn't work for the application in question. Maybe a sight with a small circle instead of a dot might work better for a shotgun if you are going to shoot more than just slugs through it.

Patriot,
Holosites are nice, but you're dependent upon batteries and fragile electronics... On my two M1014's, and my Armalite M15A4(T)â„¢ Carbine, I have Meprolight 21 Reflex sights... Tritium gold dot for low/no light, and fiber optics for daylight. 3.5 MOA, and superb reliablilty... See the photo on the following url, and you'll see what my two M1014's look like- minus the 2shot mag extensions I still haven't received!:fire:

All in all, they're beautiful weapons, and as accurate, durable, reliable, and dependable as anyone could need, want, or desire... I believe that the Meprolight is something folks should look at... I'm a bit biased, but then, hey, it's my life that depends upon them... ;)

I have two first Gen Holosights for several years each, both mounted on AR style rifles. Both are zeroed to 50yards and serve same out to 200yards. They have lasted thousands of rounds through run & gun games & lt/med. rain, and have never faltered or lost POA. They are the fastest of all red dot sight systems, their only weakness is battery-dependancy.

I do not know if they will serve as well on a shotgun, but I personally wouldn't hesitate.

CWL,
Aye, there's the rub. Supply lines, availability, duration... Please don't get me wrong- Holosights are good gear, and work well, as red dot popularity has shown, and continues to show... My Meprolights are set at 100 yards on all three of my guns (two Benelli M1014's and Armalite M15A4(T)â„¢ Carbine). With the Carbine, I generally roll tennis balls at 250 yards (measured by Bushnell laser rangefinder). I use military 5.56 55gr FMJ for practice, and have 75gr Hornady TAP and Match in case of serious "social difficulties." Have fired thousands of rounds through it, and several thousand through the shotguns- no problem with the Meprolights, or the weapons... I like how there is no change in POA or luminosity of the gold dot, when transitioning from daylight to darkness... Great stuff, fiber optics and tritium!:D Wish you well, and good shooting...
