Holster advice - P220R SOA

I bought a Sig P220R after receiving some excellent advice on this forum and now I need a holster. I'm looking for something comfortable for hiking/camping. I think I'd like a thumb strap to keep the gun from getting snagged on brush or falling out during rock scrambles. I'm wondering how much of a difference the rail makes since I see a much larger selection for the P220 without the rail. I'm also wondering if carrying a SAO cocked affects what type of holster I need. I have a concealed permit but open carry is common here (AZ) so either is fine. I've seen a lot of folks recommend Milt Sparks but I don't want to wait a long time and he's not even taking orders.

Big difference. My P220 Carry (rail) will not fit in any of my leather or kydex holsters for a regular P220.

The SAO needs a different holster because of the safety. It should be engaged with the hammer cocked if you decide to carry it. Either way, any holster that extends upward to the level of the safety will need to be modified.

You may want to try Safariland or DeSantis. I recommend calling them up and asking.

I don't see single action as an option on any holsters. Might call around tomorrow. Can't really wait till Christmas. I'd have to shove it in my belt for 10 months and am worried about pulling a Plexico B.

avoid the wait, avoid learning to release a safety strap, avoid wondering if a holster will fit your rail and avoid worrying about a hoster getting scratched...

get a Blackhawk CQC w/Serpa lock:
1. no wait, buy on-line
2. gun secured by Serpa lock until your natural drawing motion to releases it...cocked and locked hammer has no effect on the lock
3. fits both railed and non-railed 220 models...at least mine does
4. it's polymer, don't worry about it

While the SERPA is pretty good, one thing to remember is that debris can get into the mechanism and lock your gun in. This happened to me in a gun class where we had to shoot from the ground. I didn't really roll around or anything and we were in a cut grass area at Quantico. The holster went into the trash as soon as I freed my gun.

I couldn't remove the gun from the holster because the button wouldn't move. Some folks have said this is not an issue in an urban environment...but what if you get knocked down in a fight? If the holster is covered, then I'd say the odds of a lock-up are slight, but for open carry, I think it's a definite possibility.

If you plan upon just wearing it to the range or around the house, I wouldn't worry about it.

I carry my P220 SAO in a Galco Summer Comfort, or SkyOps depending if I have to tuck my shirt in. Those are the holsters I have specifically for the gun. Strangely enough it fits all the leather I have for my XD .45 compact.

that brings to mind a great holster for hiking/camping since security might be more important than speed.

the Bianchi UM-84 flap holster. they made a version for the 226 which should work for the 220. the interior foam molds to your gun
