Looking for a good holster for a Ruger 4 5/8 bbl Blackhawk 45LC. Something that isn't too bulky but comfortable for packing and camping.

I can recommend Mike Barranti of barrantileather.com who builds beautiful gear.

I carry my Super Blackhawk in the woods,..with a pack,..a lot. I use a Galco SAO. Full coverage of trigger,.safety strap,..and it gives me the option of either strong side OR crossdraw. I like it,..ymmv.

Super high quality and design, but a bit pricier than most others: Milt Sparks HSR in crossdraw. This keeps it out of your way, accessible to both hads if necessary, and on the opposite side of any long gun you might be carrying. Shown is my Ruger .44 Spec. & Sparks HSR (left hand).

The Blackhawk is a heavy gun, gets heavier the longer you carry it. Been there done that, carried a 7 1/2" SBK in a full cover Bianchi for many years. Must have pulled my pants up a bazillion times over the years. Like Lone Haranguer said a 'shoulder holster'. Fancy leather is not for the field however. Keep an eye out for a used Bianchi #111 "Cyclone" holster. It's a very good crossdraw field holster.

I would like to see somebody carrying a full camping pack and wearing those fancy belt holsters.

I would have reservations about dragging any of those fancy and expensive holsters mentioned out on a camping trip. While those holsters are probably plenty sturdy, don't care for wet leather. Especially EXPENSIVE wet leather.

How do you anticipate wearing this holster while also carrying a pack of sufficient size for overnight camping?

For me, a somewhat heavy pack rules out any sort of hip holster, as the pack-belt will interfere. I suppose you could sew a holster onto the pack belt, but that might end up being really awkward.

The pack straps are certainly going to interfere with most shoulder-holster rigs.
I guess you could sew a holster to the pack strap, but that would be similarly very awkward.

If simply stowing the pistol in an outer pocket of the pack makes it too inaccessible, and that big pistol just HAS TO be instantly available, I think you need to get a bit creative.

I like the price and features of the Uncle Mike's "Alaskan" flap holster. You can get it in right or left hand draw. I should think some MOLLE-loops sewn at just the right place on the pack, and appropriate MOLLE-clip modifications to the Uncle Mike's holster would put the pistol easily within you reach, and would allow you to detach the holster from the pack where discretion or security concerns might warrant keeping the gun out of sight.

If it works out, you might add a few MOLLE loops to your pack straps, or to your pack belt - although I think that will be more awkward than you will care for with a big honking single-action pistol hanging on your pack supports.

Dang, leather is nice, but I ended up getting the Uncle Mikes Pro-Pak Vertical Shoulder Holster. It's nylon, cheap, and definitely won't last as long as any of the aforementioned, but it's plenty comfortable, and I didn't want the gun on my hip. I've got a nice leather belt holster for my Blackhawk, but I've never once taken it on a hike.

Probably. I don't recall ever carrying with that holster/gun when backpacking, but surely it would, even if only a little. When I hike (day-hiking), I don't have a backpack. But when I'm backpacking, I'm camping overnight and I often carry a long gun.
