Hello all,
Just out of curiosity what do you all think is easier on the finish of a handgun? Leather, kydex or nylon. I know that there will eventually be wear on any handgun that sees enough holster time but which do you think is the more gentle alternative? Please add a comment as to why too please.

Nothing really set in stone, but I just like leather better. I believe Kydex and other plastic holsters tend to wear finishes faster. So , buy an HBE rig! :)

It seems to be going the way of leather being prefered. I kinda figured it would but you never know till you ask, right? Personally, I go both ways (with holsters anyways hehe) I have a Galco high ride for a stainless GP100 and a Sidearmor Kydex IWB for my Glock. I have noticed some wear on both but with them being such differant finishs I can't decide which way to go for a Walther P99. I really like the way leather feels and all but there was just something about the polymer framed semi autos that I thought it would look better in Kydex.

for inside the waist band I like leather. (Milt Sparks Versa Max II). Out side of the pant Kydex works fine for less money. Don't care about finish as my pistols are work horses not show piece. (also the Dept. purchases my carry pistol.) :neener:

ahhhh What PCRCCW said :)

For a holster to feel "alive" it had to once have BEEN alive!!!

unpleasant dreams

I prefer leather.Nylon seems too cheap and kydex has no give so sand or other particulates will scratch your finish quicker.tom.

I prefer leather; good clean Kydex may be easier on the finish

I am reminded of an issue with automotive bearings when I knew something about them - a softer bearing that trapped the grit and embedded it might be better but it had to be replaced more often too. Over a long enough life I don't know which material would do better.

For myself I don't go with soft linings on the leather holsters - I've heard experts disagree but the expert who makes my holsters says linings don't help.

No question that Kydex is easier on the finish than bad leather and maybe wears longer. I suspect Kydex really is an IDPA gamer holster in the sense of helping performance but I find leather more comfortable (it may be slower who knows) and comfort helps with the concealed part of concealed carry.

All leather - all the time

Lt.G- me too- Florida weather can be rough. If you'll give it one more go try spraying your leather holster with a good soak of silicone once a month letting it dry overnight for a couple of months then about 3-4 times a year is all it takes to maintain. This is for IWB- holsters worn outside WB would take less.
