I have a smith and wesson m&p 40. i have an uncle mikes (bought at gander mtn) iwb or owb holster, with a thumb break strap. the clip can be reversed. its an ok design, but its way too bulky for me to conceal. im begining to suspect its a total piece of crap, and ive just never encountered a quality holster. if i try to wear it iwb on my side it just sticks out waay to far and looks rediculous.

my 4006 was too heavy to carry in the small of my back, it was top heavy in the holster and would flip down, thus sticking straight out of my back. this one is not, but its super uncomfortable to sit down. which wouldnt let me drive the car with it there. or just sit down.

how do you guys carry your guns all day? something similar to my M&P 40 would be most helpful, but im open to hear however you carry whatever you carry. i mean i hear so many people carry 1911's and my gun is smaller than that, but im having a super hard time trying to tuck this thing away. i must be doing something wrong.

what specific brand holster, how much money and where did you buy it would be super helpful. the more i try the more i fail trying to conceal this thing, i am going to get my permit very soon here and want to have a carry method sorted out BEFORE hand.

btw im just practicing in my house, i dont try to carry anywhere without having my permit yet.

i have no prob speding 75 dollars or even more on a holster. i just want to know it works before i do.

"...would flip down..." The holster is only part of it. The belt holding your pants up and having the weight of a loaded pistol on it matters too. The average 'dress' belt won't carry the weight.
In any case, in a car, you won't be able to get to your firearm, quickly, if it's behind your back. Cross draw holster with a stiff belt.

I was in no way implying you wouldn't spend the money necessary to get a good holster, I was just trying to warn you what you were going to see when you went to the links I provided.

I bought a DeSantis Thumb Break Scabbard holster for my 4" S&W M619. I'm very happy with it since it makes a very heavy gun comfortable to carry.

I carry my 1911 strong side, just a hair behind my hip bone, in a DeSantis "top cop" holster when I'm particularly interested in good concealment (which isn't all that often anymore, open and/or sloppy carry is perfectly legal here, so I more often just use a kydex Uncle Mikes thumb break holster with a jacket that covers it, but I'm sure the bulge would be visible to anyone who knew what to look for :)).It has real good, adjustable retention, open top, thin, quality leather.Having a good, stiff belt makes a big difference.Mine works with a so-so belt, but it will not be held as close to the body as with a good, thick stiff belt. Then, it's right up nice and tight.I think I paid like $60 a couple years ago.

!BELTS!

jrfoxx has given good advice. Buy a very good quality *gun* belt. You won't find these at Sears or The Gap. A belt is the foundation your holster is carried on. Many (most) holster makers will sell you a good belt that will also match the belt slots or tunnel in your holster. This fit between belt and holster will mitigate a lot of the flopping around you noticed with the Uncle Mike's, probably also with a "normal" belt.

Spend this on your belt. Spend another 75-150 on a good leather holster. Try Milt Sparks or Mitch Rosen, diddnt see those on the list.

A good belt/holster combination will probably run in the $150-200 range, and that's not for the real high-end leather (like Mitch Rosen, for instance, whose stuff looks awesome but the stuff I really want is priced well out of my range :()

Another thing to be aware of is that if you order from many holster makers, be prepared not only to spend a bit for good equipment, but to wait a while, too. It's one of the compromises.

That said, I have a CZ P-01 and a full-size 1911. I have a OWB belt holster from K&D holsters for the CZ, and a Don Hume IWB as well. Both are comfortable, reasonably priced (the Don Hume is very inexpensive and relatively high quality for the price).

The 1911 is occasionally carried, always OWB, in a Springfield-made leather holster. The good gun belt is the key, though. Mine is from Galco, just their basic leather gunbelt, but it's really nice.

I have recently been BLOWN AWAY by the Minamalist kydex IWB from Brian Hoffner!

He built a Minamalist for my Detonics CombatMaster, and I was amazed at both his thoughtful design work and the ease of carrying a basically heavy gun.

It's no secret to you guys that I'm basically pissy about carry holsters. I have for years and years used either leather from the great Lou Alessi or kydex from my good friend Tim Wegner at Blade-Tech, the standard against which all other synthetic holsters are judged.

I contacted Brian after learning that world class trainer John Farnam, who is arguably a lot pissier than me, had gone to the Minamalist as his basic carry holster — just because I'm pissy doesn't mean I'm not willing to learn something new!

thanks for all the replys guys. i didnt mean to sound ****ty ArchAngelCD. i just didnt want people to leave out quality holster options, because of price.

i cant believe the belt thing never occured to me. i have a ten dollar belt from target with a bunch of cracks in it.

do all these holsters have to be ordered. does anyone know of a store i can go check some good ones out it. i really only want to buy ONE more holster.

again thanks for all the help.

Some shops will have some holsters on hand. The Don Hume IWB I use was in the $20-30 range (like I said, remarkable quality for the price), and it was off the rack at a local shop. AFAIK, most holsters will need to be ordered since you'll need to specify gun model, which hand you use, what color you want (if that's an option), and so forth.

I personally like the "Cozy Partner" IWB from DeSantis. That's what my daily carry rides in.

I carry EVERYTHING from a Smith & Wesson 637-2 J-frame .38 to a Smith & Wesson 4006, to a Smith & Wesson 4506, to a Colt fullsize 1911, to a NAA Mini-Mag Black Widow, to a High Standard Double-Nine Longhorn .22, to a Dan Wesson 15-2 HV, all in the SAME #915 Galco Jak-Slide belt holster... held up by a custom made gun-belt (1.25" wide STIFF leather, with a "Dodge" logo imprinted on it)

the only handgun I own that doesn't seem to like it is my TC contender... (gee, I wonder why?)

Holsters with no waiting.

The most common brand for "off the shelf" availability is Galco. I use and like the "concealable". They are available at a lot of good gunshops and online. The plus side is good quality and quick posession. The downside is that a true custom job will be of even better quality.

4006,
Yes you will probably have to order a quality belt and holster. I suggest:
http://www.miltsparks.com/
http://www.bulmangunleather.com/beltholster.html
You can try contacting the following to see if they have anything in stock:
http://www.lightningarms.com/products.htm

Suggestion:
1. Get a quality holster belt, double thickness, and 1.5" width. Measure and order length as specified by the individual maker
2. Get a quality holster with loops for 1.5" belt. Make sure your loops are not larger than your belt width.
You may have to wait 3-4 months but I think your carrying problems will then be solved.

Good shooting and be safe.

The combo I have is excellent and didn't cost too much. $70 for an Andrews Macdaniel II with the body shield, and $70 for a beltman 1.5" bullhide belt. Shipping is another $10 or so, and I'm super happy with the setup.

The Andrews is nice because you can adjust the cant. I wear mine right near 3:00-3:30 with a little extra cant to keep the butt of the gun up high.

I'm interested in the Milt Sparks VMII, but that will have to wait.
