Hello all;

I own a Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter in 44mag and a Ruger Single Six Hunter, each of which are used for hunting. I cannot seem to find a holster that will work for either of these pistols. When wanting to hunt with one of the revolvers, I always just carry it in my hand.

At the end of deer season last year, as well as small game, I was very frustrated with the option I was left with to hunt with one of the revolvers. I remember saying that it almost wasn't worth it to hunt with one of them due to the frustration of having to constantly hold my sidearm.

With that said, I am turning to the crew at THR. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I could go to get a holster made for each of these? I'm also open to factory made as well, I would just prefer it to be leather. I have come to realize that the problem is the thick mount on top of the revolver, designed for mounting a scope. I am keeping these revolvers with open sites, no scopes.

Thanks everyone in advance for suggestions of where I could look for a maker that produces a holster for these two wonderful sidearms.

iShoot17, take a look at my facebook page. I hand craft every product on the page. It's all done with needle and thread,as I don't have a sewing machine. If I can be of service, please let me know. My holsters are $69.95 plus shipping. If you have your own design, I am sure that we can work out something. Thanks Joe. P.S.My page is facebook.com/randjsp.

I've seen a few well made holsters for hunting/range/outdoor uses...
Check these firms, always contact the holster shop or company to make sure they have the product you want & how long it may take to get.
Many holster makers & firms are back-ordered due to the high demands or slow processing times. Many are small business owners with 1-3 staff working on the holsters and accessories. ;)

See: DeSantis, Bianchi-intl, Don Hume, Galco, Mernickle, Simply Rugged, Lawman Leathergoods, Tex Shoemaker.

For handgun hunting, Im impressed with the HuSH shoulder holster from Bianchi Intl. It was T&Eed by noted outdoor writer and hunter; Dick Metcalf. You can wear the nylon rig in a chest holster or hip style. :D
Lawman Leathergoods marketed the "Dirty Harry" shoulder holster for years. They had a bad QC problem & many unhappy customers but to my understanding, the entire shop was purchased by new owners & new management came on to improve the company. The STU holster is good. They sell hunting holsters too but I don't recall the brand name.
Mernickle & Simply Rugged are popular. I heard of a custom holster maker in AK but I can't remember his name. Double D Diamond or Double Diamond. If I can find it, I will edit this post or PM you.

I think I would look into a chest rig. It allows you to be narrower through the hips when using a deer stand such as a climber, and easy access while seated.

I have a cheap nylon holster attached (zip-tied) to the suspender of my hunting bibs.
Just a thought.

Standard holsters for the correct barrel length should fit without issue. I can't see the top rib being an issue whatsoever. The front sight determines how much room there is at the top and it is always taller than anything else. One for the large frame would just need to be molded for the longer ejector.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I have called a few places and have received mixed reviews on the Hunter model fitting other holsters. I think at this point, I'm going to order pancake holsters from Simply Rugged as well as the Chesty Pully system. Hopefully all will work out!
