Holy Crap!!! Shots Fired Behind My House!!!!!!

I'm guessing that most of the posters haven't checked your profile.

I'm guessing that, at age 16, you're really not going to be in a position to take the "you should move" advice.

All said and done, I'm happy you didn't have to deal with any of the little lead zingers.

What part of the "West Valley" are you in? I lived out in Goodyear for about a year. I used to commute through Avondale, Cashion, Tolleson, and Glendale on my way to work.

Some of those communities are pretty nice.

Others . . . hey, just passing through.

Glad you're okay.

Wow, coincidence! Just yesterday there was shots fired behind my house 60-75 rounds at least, over a period of 2 hours or so. Of course I was shooting and most of it was out of my .50 cal muzzle loader.

It's really impossible to give any advice. Where do you live? Is it typical to have shots being fired nearby? Are you sure it was a firearm? How far away was it? I've lived in places where shots being fired was routine and would never justify a call to 911.

shots

I live in the country and you occasionally hear shots ring out. Could you hear how far away they were? How many times did they fire? We don't go to grabbing guns until they are within sight and not invited, then question the nature of their uninvited visit on your property. Always keep the muzzle pointed at their feet. They will get the clue.

I'm pretty sure what I saw was a dispute, and I dont believe anyone got hurt, cuz there was nothing on the news on it, but the cops came a few minutes later.

Don't be so sure that just because it didn't make the evening news that nothing happened. I would have said the same thing before I got a police scanner. If the TV news doesn't have video coverage, it doesn't make it onto the news any more.

I'd lock the doors, call the cops, drop a loaded .38Spl into my pocket, and lie low until the cops got there. I've only had to do that once in my 54 years on this planet, but that's the way I would do it again.

I live just the other side of the street from Glendale, on an intersection with a stop light. Some months, there's a shot or two per week out at that intersection. Some months, nothing. I suppose I should mind, but I've gotten used to it. Gives my neighbor and I an excuse to come out of our houses, shake hands, and speculate what caliber was involved.

Calling the cops for gunshots is a waste of everyone's time. If you see a body, call 'em. If you see someone still out there with a gun, call 'em. Otherwise, what are the cops expected to do, interview the air to find out where the long-gone sound came from and ask the street which way the shooter went?

Jeeze, I hate that expression....

"...shots rang out..."

No offense. I just do.

You've obviously never lived in South Richmond (Va.) have you? "Shots fired" including full auto were pretty much an every other night thing for my wife and I lived there.

Around here now, it means someone is hunting or just shooting.

Why don't we knock this nonsense off right now! I understand you're joking, but let's hope the OP does as well.

Sorry, Cosmoline, but I live in a nice neighborhood filled with old ladys(not joking)surrounded by some pretty rough ghettos filled with gangs and robberys are frequent so if I heard shots in my yard I wouldn't be to hesitant if I had to shoot back.

To paraphraze someone from another board: Why do all the interesting things happen to people with low post counts?

I don't get any shots in my neighborhood, I caught a kid once in my backyard which is fenced, when i went outside to check it out with my 38 in my hand he piss his pants. I called his parents and he got a whooping right in front of my house. I felt sorry for the kid after he pissed his pants then a beating. that's life I guess. But he haven't come back for sure, lol

"it's labor day....

probably firecrackers."

Yeah that was what happened to me last night. My neighborhood has had shootings in the past. Last night a friend of mine who is an out of state LEO was up visiting and heard firecrackers, thought they were gunshots and went to investigate. (He's from MD though so he wasn't too used to fireworks!)

in AZ, fireworks arnt used on Labor Day. we save them for 4th of July, Memorial Day, Christmas, and New Year. its cause they are illegal, so we gotta drive to NM or Mexico to get them. i love fireworks (even though we technicaly arnt supposed to have them) and i know the difference in sound. it is a big difference between a firecracker and a 10mm or .45acp. not even the little mortars sound like that. and who sets off fireworks on SUNDAY at 11 at night? thats the day BEFORE Labor Day.

I always think it's funny when a civillian uses terms like "secured the perimeter." At about 8 minutes before you posted the comment would mean that the time was around 10:23 P.M. correct? If you are worried about hostile actions outside your house, poking your head out the door peering around in darkness or even flashing a light around is probably not the best idea. Calling 9-1-1 was a good idea, but locking your doors, turning out the lights, and maybe alerting your parents in person or by phone would have been a good idea as well.

Even for trained personnel "securing a perimeter" at night can be a tricky procedure, especially without night vision, and especially alone. Might have been better to hunker down in your house. That way if something bad was going on the bad guy would have to enter your house through a door or window or something of that nature and you probably would have the drop on him/her. Remember, however, that if you are going to attack make sure you ID your target first. Just don't blast a family member fumbling for their keys wondering why the heck all the lights were out.

flak, it is the first term that came to mind when i was typing. sorry if my estimation of time was incorrect. i did call my parents after the 911 call. i locked the doors, didnt go outside. mom didnt raise no moron. i had a 12ga when i was going round closing blinds and dimming lights. chained the door, turned the alarm on, ect. THEN i hunkered down at the computer.

Of course, even when shots are *not* being fired in anger, I find a cold brew comforting.

Biker

I am of the understanding that 'securing the perimeter' is bad doctrine; instead of you having the element of surprise and waiting (while being prepared and armed) the bad guy in your backyard will be able to see you and get the first jump on you.

I would have grabbed my 1911 or my SKS, locked myself down in a room and covered the windows, and get on the phone with the Police Department or Sheriff's Office and let them clear everything out as my first option.

*EDIT*

Just saw your post on this page.

when i hear shots fired behind my house,i take a big swig of rum strap on my cutless
and prepare to repel boarders,,,aarrggggghhhhhhhhhh:neener:

cause its not a good idea to mix rum and firearms,,,, just joking!

keep your head down arm up and if they dont come thru your door after a half hour or so relax:) ive heard or read somewhere that iron bathtubs were a popular feature of homes in big city ghettos.
