Why does anyone buy ammo at Sportsmans Guide???? I've never seen anything there I thought was a good buy. Want a good buy on 7.62x39? Check this out: J & G Sales Totally Awesome Price on 7.62x39
Besides....why does everyone "stock up" on this caliber? I figure if ever the SHTF, there'll be plenty of weekend warriors running around carrying AK-47's with 40 rd. banana clips from whom I'll shanghai my ammo!:D

takhtakaal - do you have any further links to the 124gr HP, preferably pics in gelatin.

Shanghaied ammo from "weekend warriors"?

Sounds like you intend to pop them from a distance and rob their corpses.

Really, really High Road stuff, yes.

Stick with airsoft, please?

Sorry...I'll try to be more politically correct.
Seriously, I live in a rural area on a fairly large plot of land away from the road. If I can see someone from my house, they're likely trespassing.

It is still possible to get lucky. I went to a small local gun shop on Friday. The guy had 20% off all Winchester ammo and Silver Bear at last years prices. I got .45 FMJ Winchester White box for $12.00 a box and Silver Bear .308 for $6.99. Bought all he had of each. You have to keep a few bucks hidden in the wallet for just such an occasion. Good deals are harder and harder to find. Nothing worse than watching a gun shop owner change the prices on ammo that has been sitting on the shelf for years because they heard that prices are going up, seen that happen lately, won't buy there anymore. The stuff was still there because his prices were too high anyway.

Its getting worse everyday. Ammo prices are an all time high. I ordered the Ulyanovsk HP from Century Arms long time ago for $95 for a 1000 rds with another 1000 rds of the Sapsan FMJ for same price. Then $ 10 shipping. I still have few hundreds left to keep for hunting purposes. Now my son is getting interested to shoot the AK 47. SO that means I have to order more . I may have to go with the Golden Tiger bec I heard its more cleaner. I will stay away from WOlf if at all possible.

I've shot quite a bit of Wolf, Barnaul and Golden Tiger. I'll take the Golden Tiger hand-down anytime. It's been the most accurate in my rifles; almost as accurate as my handloads.

The hog was 20 yds a way. Very amazing results from a mil round. It does its intended purpose.

Don't worry about it. It's an AK, after all. It's SUPPOSED to digest dirty ammo.

Now... if we're talking ammo for an AR... yeah.

About the hog... HOLY CRAP I DID NOT KNOW 7.62x39mm SOVIET COULD DO THAT TO AN ANIMAL.

You should see what that particular round manages to do to inferior steel plate, too.

You think it's just good on gelatin and carcasses?

:what:

That's why I'd like to keep a good supply of it.

Yeah I got a bunch of 9mm hollow points recently. . . and realized that even if bad days came, I shouldn't be reaching for the pistol. So yeah I'm trying to sell it and get more 7.62x39 :)

Not that I mean for this thread to veer all over the place, but you said something that seemed to need a response, rifle-related or not. Your point about the amount of 9mm is well taken, and ...

Really, you need so much FMJ/MC for occasional practice, but a pistol is generally a last-ditch item. Most people have three magazines that they rotate with another set or two, but even keeping those filled, in a high-cap, is somewhat north of three boxes of 50 or so. Let's figure on three to five slow rotations in and out of carry ammo (yeah, face it, it's a "wear item") at about four to six month periods each. Over two and a half years, if you were to cycle it out entirely every six months, only keeping six filled at a time, for, say, a Glock 17, you'd only be at 510 rounds or so, give or take the one in the chamber. So I don't see what it pays, other than as something to convert into something else of value, to keep thousands and thousands of rounds of first-tier defensive pistol ammunition around.

FWIW, I've stocked up on the Remington 115 gr. JHP 100 round VPs (L9MM1B) from W*M -- it's the most reasonable way to break it down into chunks, so to speak, and none of the online places can come close. No, it isn't +P, it isn't cutting-edge design, but it works.

Here's a test report: http://www.gunandgame.com/forums/am...115gr-standard-pressure-water-denim-test.html

I stock up on rifle ammo. I've got 300+ 30.06; 800+ 7.62 Soviet, and a couple Federal bulk packs of .22LR. I'm buying a few cases of 7.62X54R from J&C sales tomorrow. They're the best price I've found for 54R. I only keep a hundred or so of 9mm and probably less than 100 of .380ACP. Hopefully within a year I'll have my own place with a garage or a basement where I can set up a reloading rig, but right now its not practical (or legal). Nor is storing amounts of ammo that would qualify as "stocking up" to most here.

Also, I see ammo prices as being very similar to everything else that is increasing in price. When my parents were kids, they wouldn't imagine gas being over a dollar, much less 3. I remember gas being 95 cents, and that was only 6 years ago. Everything gets more expensive, ammo is not excepted. We will complain, but we'll keep paying for it.

Also, did anyone notice the timestamp on Nathan's pic (post #36)? 5:56. I know its a 7.62 rifle, but thats not a real time.

sportsmens warehouse just down the road sells wolf for 4.79 a box... i used to get it from sg, but the price went up too high to justify it. also have a sporting goods store that advertises 1000 rounds for $200 in the neighboorhood

That's about what it looks like at my place at 5:56pm this weekend. Well, except there's more hogs, no feeder and you'd be staring down the barrel of an 8mm at a boar as big as a Kia.

Honestly, X39 is fun to shoot, but when I go shopping in the pasture I take enough gun so I don't have to pick through the cactus to find supper.

And if you think $200/thousand is expensive, then you need to ship me all your Mausers for safe keeping.

Assuming the war in Iraq and Afghanistan ends and troops come home in a year, maybe prices of the 7.62 x 39 will settle back. Then the Dem s will ban more importations and we all be screwed!

I think part of the sensitivity that some of us (including me) have towards ammo price increases is a reflection of the quantity below which we refuse to go in a given caliber.

Some people seem perfectly content in an EBR to have one case that never gets touched. Others insist on three, or five. Some of us, perhaps the more paranoid of the Tackleberry types, think 20K rounds is a bare minimum. Plainly put, that crap adds up.

The only answers are (1), to figure out what you think you need, and stick to it like a disciplined bidder at an auction, and (2), get what you can, cheaply, when you can. The other year, when Wal*Mart was undergoing its inventory shakeup and restructuring, I unashamedly grabbed a bunch of the 40 round WWB .223 Remington 55 grain Israeli-made value packs for a grand total of $164.30, including tax. Arguably, this stuff can be compared to the Q3131, and the last I saw, that was now going for close to 50¢ a round, not 13¢ after taxes.

Wolf Ammo

How is the quality of this stuff? I'm an informal target shooter only. Is this ammo ok. The price is palatable. Anything negative about this brand?. Thanks.
