Home Defence shotgun advice

Of course unless you are The Terminator
I had to look it up.
A Marushin M188 lever action shotgun.
To me, not a pistol grip, but rather a cut down stock.
let's make it unanimous; no PGO.
??
I'm surprised no one has chimed in and said, "Forget all that, get a Glock."

Marushin M188
Uh... you realize that Marushin is a Japanese company that makes airsoft replicas?

In this case, a replica of a Winchester 1887 lever-action shotgun. Arnie may have been using a prop gun, but it probably wasn't airsoft.

Remington 870 youth 20 ga, 21" barrel. And a limbsaver slip-on to add LOP for a correct fit AND reduce recoil. JMHO

I relied on my shotgun for many years in some very bad places here in south Florida... The only place for a very short popper with a pistol grip is for the entry man (and he'd just as soon have something better... if the situation allowed it). Your best bet is the simplest, a standard 12ga. pump gun with an 18 to20" barrel, a four round magazine, and some practice- particularly to understand patterning. You're going to have to aim it every time, and across a good sized room (say 21 feet) the pattern will be no more than 7" with OO buck... That basic weapon will defend your home, no doubt, particularly if you aim just a bit low.... Hope this helps

Just to throw this out there; What about a Saiga magazine fed shotgun. It's semi-auto so no pumping needed and they come in 20 gauge. New they are only around $500-550, you should be able to find a used one in your price range.

No, I just Googled "Terminator 2 gun". Thanks for the update.
You are right. Another source said,
The three prop Winchester 1887 shotguns used in the film. The one on the left is the "Rosebox Shotgun", the one in the center is the rubber stunt prop, and the one to the right is the large lever loop shotgun for one-handed flip cocking - 10 Gauge.
I see in different photos, that the guns were slightly different as far as the cocking lever.
I love that movie.

Benelli Nova Tactical

They aren't cheap but you should be able to find a used one for under $400 dollars easy. I just picked one up a few weeks ago for about $285. Nothing wrong with an 870 or 500 but the Nova is superior by anyones standards.

Pardner pump Protector ...it's a clone of the 870 remington and can be purchased at Dicks and other large outlets for under $200. A very strong, reliable shotgun,18in cilinder bore barrel .Takes 2 3/4 or 3in shells.Slugs ,buckshot, birdshot, it handles them all without a hitch.

What he said. I sell a ton of these. I believe they will interchange with 870 parts. Sturdy, reliable and cheap.

There are so many good pump shot guns that will fit the bill. It really comes down to ergos and which setup you like best.

I personally bought a 870 Police Mag used and put a knoxx spec ops on it. It cost me under $400 for the entire setup and it runs like a champ.

Depending on how stout grandpa is 12 might not be the right gauge. I actually prefer to shoot my wifes 20 guage with a 18" barrel. She loads it with 20 pellet #3 buck.

Where are you finding OO for a 20 gauge?

The truth is that managed recoil 12ga will kick less in a 12ga than a standard 20ga load.

under 400 you will be able to get a 2 barrel set for a 870 or a 500 from any "big box" outdoors store.

The wifes 20 gauge was a one of those 870 sets IIRC. Not that I am thinking about it I believe it is a 20" barrel and then a 26" that came with the set. I bought it at Gander Mountain on sale before Xmas one year.

THanks for the input everyone!

I will talk to him again about the pistol grip/no stock and point out it has very little practical use with those outside of home defence.

I saw that the Remington 870 was a popular reccomendation, and that some even come with 2 barrels? That would be a huge bonus, I didn't know they did something like that with the home defence type guns, only for the skeet/trap, but you learn something new every day!

Is there a special term used to describe a short barreled 870 shotgun made by Remington, like is it an 870 HD, or an 870 riot, or something along those lines?
Same with the Mossberg, any specific name to the H/D guns other than model 500?

Actually, you should tell him they have little practical use IN home defense.

Yes, their names for the 8-shot is the "Persuader" model, but I wouldn't go about it looking for that. Just ask for a full-stocked 18" or 20" Model 500, with no frills. Some of Mossberg's recent listings come with goofy attachments like huge muzzle breaks, fake suppressors, and breecher standoffs -- none of which do anything but mess up a home-defense gun.

Why, in your opinion, do you think tht the Nova is better? Not trying to sound smart, just asking.
Sorry, I should've elaborated. It doesn't exactly blow away the competition but there are a number of minor things that can't be ignored. Most of the internal parts are nickle plated for weather resistance, the factory stock is of higher quality and tougher, it can handle 3.5" shells in case you're particularly mad at your shoulder, and a stainless steel lined barrel for longer life. All factory. It's not a magic death wand by any means but I do feel it's marginally superior to a bare bones 870 or 500. Considering I found mine for $285, it wasn't much of a competition.

atf has ruled that pistol grip shotguns are destructive devices and are illegal

Are you being serious? That is not what they said at all and their classification didn't change. Ones that came from the factory as PGOs were and are title one other weapons. Please don't parrot ignorant nonsense. You may want to actually read what the ATF releases and read the language of the statute as opposed to taking some random dudes uniformed opinion as fact.

It's one thing to have an OPINION about pistol grip shotguns and state it, as many here have done ad nausium, (including me) but to lie to further your cause is over the top.
There is no such ruling from the AFT or anyone else.

HD Shotgun

My Mossberg 500 12-gauge came from Bass Pro with a 21-inch modified barrel and an 18.5-inch cylinder bore barrel. It came from the factory with a full stock but had a pistol grip tossed in as an extra. Changing to the pistol grip just required prying off the buttplate and using a really long screwdriver (or socket, I can't recall). That pistol grip went on for one painful afternoon, then came off and went to the back of a drawer.

Let him try a pistol grip, but don't saddle Grampa with a shotgun that won't mount a full stock.

I agree.
The 20 ga. shotgun probably has less mass than the 12 ga. and recoil can be surprising.
I don't know if anyone makes managed recoil 20 ga.
