Help me out here guys. I'm in the market for a home defense/combat shotgun. I have been DROOLING over the Benelli M4 ever since it hit the street. I know it's battle proven but MAN WHAT A PRICE!! *

I recently stumbled across the mossberg 930 spx, well refound it. I know it was shotgun of the year in 09 according the the American rifelman. Price to feature wise it's got alot of bang for thebuck. With the money saved over the Benelli I could buy alot of ammo and wiz bang toys for the mossy....

Other: like scattergun technologies stuff but don't know of any available locally and they run as much as the Benelli....... *Tricked out 870????? *

Watch ya say???????

I want the Benelli IN A BAD WAY but just cant clear that price hurtle. Should I just go ahead and buy it to avoid te feeling of "I shoulda bought the Benelli!"???????

with the benelli the only possible remorse would be when shown up by a saiga 12
other than that i think the benelli is the choice i saw one on youtube that had the barrel shortened to where the stock tube ends and the collapsible stock and i was jealous

If you REALLY want that model, then save up a little longer and get it - you'll always be comparing what you bought to what you wanted to buy - if the M4 is the gun for you, don't settle for anything less - buyer's remorse really sucks....... ;)

That's pretty much what I'm thinking onthe buyers remorse. They have it price at 100 under msrp and said they could come off that a little. They have one M4 a boatload of m2s and a few supernovas. I'll fondle them all and see if they have a 930spx to look over.

Decisions decisions........ Lol

Well, if ya go ahead and get it, you will know you have a quality weapon ~ one that will be passed down to your kids or grandkids. I am 67, and have discovered that if you don't get what you want, you will never be completely satisfied with what you do get and your thoughts will be ".......if only......". Hallmark Cards slogan comes to mind....."You care enough to give the very best."

2wheelsgood what set up do you have on you supernova tac
does it interfere with 922r stuff?

922R stuff, to the best of my understanding, only applies to semi-autos. Mine is a pump. And the gun is store-bought, not built.

It's just a stock SuperNova Tactical with a Nordic mag extension and a Fenix TK-15 light. The light has a tactical switch on the bottom end, so it's extremely easy to turn on with your thumb by simply sliding your hand forward. Works very well, and that light is freakishly bright (though it's adjustable).

I have a Benelli M2 and an 1187 police. The M2 kicks like a mule. The recoil is worse than my 870. The 1187 is VERY low recoil. I know the M4 operates similarly to the 1187. I'd save for the M4, if that is what makes you happy. Otherwise I'd look for an 1187 police or the 930 spx. That way you avoid all the 922 stuff.

Saigas are nice, but that long magazine throws me, drums are awkward and by the time you've gotten done tricking them out you may as well have bought the Benelli.

Get a pump and all the tactical junk you want for WAY less than the M4.

You ever wanted something knowing that there are other products that will do the job as well but no matter what you looked at, and how you tried to talk yourself out of it, you just can't shake that want????

Pretty much the situation I'm in. Lol. Looked over the 590 spx, and the m2 a litte. I have a couple pumps I could conver but ones my turkey gun and the others were handed down from grandparents so I dot want to rework those.

There's just something drawing me to the M4!

Benelli makes darn fine shotguns, but those are beyond my budget, too...

So, I make do with a Maverick 88 as my HomeLand Security*** shotgun

***Shotgun Secures my Home & Land from those of felonious intent ;)

I was reading this and thinking, "how expensive could this be for such a debate?" Holy!! I'm seeing MSRP $1,800! I had no clue - so much for ever getting one of those! the 870 will do I guess ... but boy I'd love to try out one of the M4's, I can really see the appeal.

No reason not to get what you want if you have the money.

But buyer's remorse can work the other way too, ya know. You can spend a whole bunch'o'bucks on something only to find out you don't really like it all that much.

So- have you shot an example of your much-lusted-after 'Nelli M4 yet? Wouldn't you really rather try before you buy?

I never have even handled an M4 yet, but I've had a couple of M1S90s along the way. Yes, they're good shotguns, and fast to shoot- most of 'em will shoot faster than their owners can hit, as a matter of fact. Would I buy another one?

Nope.

Not when I can get four or five decent used 870s for the price of one 'Nelli (looking at the current price of an M2 Tactical). It would be "six or seven decent used 870s" for the price of an M4.

Oh, and I bought a 930 a couple years ago just to see what all the uproar was about. I'll still take a good used 870, thanks.

But that's just me. I'm a notorious old stick in the mud. No need to pay any attention to my meanderings. I don't know nothin' 'bout buyin' no shotgun.

:D

And someone can go the other way - personally, 1800 for something you REALLY want and will last you a long time is a mere pittance to the money spent on ammo, targets, range time, etc. I just bought my wife the Beretta A400 - it was $1400 USED - she tried several guns and determined this was the gun for her - could we have bought 5 or 6 pumps? Sure, but what for? Why would I want 5 or 6 of the same item when I really wanted 1 of a different type that really tripped her trigger? (pun intended)

Personally, I would rather have 1 shotgun I absolutely wanted, fit right, and was going to do what I needed it do to very well, than have 5 or 6 "not good enoughs" that don't

all the tactical junk

what a true statement...lol...

If you like the Benelli operating system but are on a budget i would suggest finding a Beretta 1201FP, under the skin it is the same operating system as a Super 90. The buttstock will interchange and most Benelli accessories will work as well. And they can normally be bought for around $400.

For me I don't need multiple 870s (even though I actual do have them) if I want a fighting gun, I need one that I can then put the time in to learn how to use. I don't want half a dozen compromises when it comes to a serious tool, I want what I want. A Benelli M4 is a superior fighting gun to an 870 IMHO. Is it worth $1100 more? That probably depends on a number of factors. How much money one has to spend. How likely one is to really ever need it etc.

If you just wont be happy without a Benelli save up longer and buy one. That said there is IMHO and experience nothing magic about a Benelli. They are nice and a top tier gun but I'm not sure they are truly worth the premium they command over certain other guns.

I also have 930 SPX and although it doesn't have a super high round count as it is not my primary auto loader 12 gauge it has been 100% reliable and I've been very happy with it. I got it NIB for like $490 OTD. Is a Benelli worth 1K more? Well again that depends. To me based on my experience probably not. The Benelli has some aditional features but they are not worth the difference to me based on my uses.

Another gun worth looking at is the FN. To me though if one has a 930 that runs 100% the FN doesn't offer any material advantage

Saigas are nice, but that long magazine throws me, drums are awkward and by the time you've gotten done tricking them out you may as well have bought the Benelli.

I don't know if you might as well have bought a Benelli, but you are correct you will be in the same price range.

In sum, Benellis are nice guns. There is nothing magic about them and personally I don't think the M4 offers as much of a performance advantage as one might hope for based on the price tag. If you just have to have one and wont be happy with anything other than it, cut out some discretionary spending, save up, shop around, and buy one.

If you are not dead set on that brand, then identify what your true requirements are and buy a gun that meets them.

Rem 870 pump with 18.5" barrel is the way to go, 100 percent reliablity, its more reliable then a semi-auto shotgun for HD.

Pumps have proven themselves time and time again to be more prone to operator error than a good semi is to mechanical failure.

I would have to say this is opinion rather than fact. A well maintained and properly set up semi-auto is every bit as reliable as a pump. In competition I see more short strokes than failures with quality semi's. With the exceptions of some experiments with ultra light reloads my Benelli 121M has never had a malfunction and the only malfunction with my 1100 was traced to a badly worn gas ring finally breaking, if I had replaced it when I noticed the damage the problem would not have happened...my laziness there.

To me guns are a lot like cars...you can buy a Yugo every few years or buy a car that will last for decades...quality always costs more but tends to be worth it in the long run.

i thought the pistol grip on a pump made 922r apply
i bought an unconverted saiga 12 with a surefire 12/13 round stuck in it from a gun store i still dont know if it was legal or not

this old ithica double has had it,s barrels shortened to 20 inches and has been a house and mom&pop store protector for over 70 years,i don,t know if it was ever used on any one, but i have shot it with #oo buckshot and at 20 or so yards and it would have got the job done. it has many handleing marks and a lot of blueing loss, but it is still tight on face and has ex bores. eastbank.

Winchester Defender, Ithaca 37 Defender, Remington 870

One of these three would be my choice. Reasonable price and then you can spend more in ammo to become proficient with it.

The more effective HD shtgun has more to do with the shooter than the hardware IMHO.

Good luck!
