walther p99

My walther but it won't be a wondernine until sept 15(knock on wood!!), then it would be a true wondernine. I have to say though if I had I full size 1911 .45 it would be my first choice for defensive protection for the house.

Love those big-bore revolvers... my bedside gun is usually one of my S&W 625's in .45 ACP using moonclips.

Try a test sometime... even with hearing protection on. Fire a .45 ACP indoors, and then fire a .357 Magnum. You'll really hear the difference! A slow big bore is much easier on the ears than a fast blaster.

If I hear trouble coming, I won't be using a handgun at all... I'll be totin' either a carbine or a shotgun.

Next to the bed? SIG P220 .45ACP loaded with Remington Golden Sabers. My wife has a Taurus 617S revolver loaded with .38+P Golden Sabers. Marlin 1894C in .357 under the bed. AK and AR in the bedroom closet for now. I keep meaning to get a decent shotgun at some point. Not this week.

.38 Special +P

My S & W snubbie +P usually, but if I had time I wouldn't hesitate to grab my Kimber Ultra Carry II. Problem is, if it happens I'm apt not to have that time and/or fumble around with primary safety, so I keep always keep my 642 handy.

Uh Kurt, I was being facetious.

Also on your comment of using a .45 1911 and making a huge mistake if you're not using one for HD, how do you explain your following post, the one that reads as follows:

""I also would suggest some good training, as the 1911 isn't usually a good right out-of-the-box choice for most folks.""

Just what I want for HD, a gun that's not reliable out of the box or one thats bad enough I have to go to training to learn how cope with it at 4:00 AM in the dark. Maybe you meant something else?

First choice is the Mossberg but a G22 is my nightstand gun. Wife's is her G26. The 1911 is a fine choice IMO but not for everybody, well trained or not. Definately not the only good choice out there.

Rem 870 first, but if it must be a handgun...Beretta 9mm, 17+1 Federal 9BPLE

Well neither is a higher education. But both of them should be considered an ultimate goal, and one to aspire to.

I voted 1911. :D

My aspirations when it comes to handguns are purely results oriented. Looks, style and sentimentality hold little favor with me. been there, done that with the 1911 and I like them just fine. The results with another flavor pushed me to use and vote for other. :neener:

For when things go 'bump' in the night..

Bedroom-Kahr with night sights
Front rooms-Mdl 13

salty.

Well, the CZ PCR is the closest at hand but if I were expecting more serious resistance, a 12 gauge would be a preferred choice.

I voted for .45 1911 as the best choice for me on the list. My first choice would be an AR-15.

I like Preacherman's idea or a major caliber revolver and I think I'm gonna switch my nightstand gun with my 625.

Home Defnse gun?

My ideas for my own home defense guns are a good Ruger Security six in the night stand next to my bed and a Rem 870 police shotgun with an extended mag tube next to that with a butt cuff of assorted shells attached to it always, and an MTM 12 ga. box of shells of assorted shot sizes on the night stand next to it. And then theres the Mini 14 behind the door, and a 20rd. mag in the night stand. Covers all bases. I'm really not parinoid or anything I'm just out of room in the safe and both of my other gun cabinets. :D

In the imortal words of Massad Ayoob, a .45 ACP 1911 will help you make it through the night! (Or something close to that)

I tend to agree. There is no perfect firearm but a well maintained 1911 is about as close as I can get.

Wife keeps a .38 Colt Detective Special under her pillow. I keep a Winchester 1300 12 gauge under my side of the bed.

I keep a S&W 686 loaded with .357 under my bed and a Steyr M9 9mm in the front room, the theory being that with its strange security device the Steyer may puzzle the BG long enough for me to react if he got to it first... Pleased to never yet having had to verify my theory!

How I respond to a threat largely depends on what room I am in. There is always a LW Commander and a cell phone within five feet of me wherever I am in the apartment. If I am in the back part of the apartment I get the shotgun first. If I think there are multiple bad guys, the SKS gets the nod. Just depends on the situation. I would like to be able to use the .45 to fight my way back to the heavy stuff.

My favorite home defense guns are the Smith&Wesson Model 642 and the Colt Model 1991A1 Stainless. I carry the Smith around until bedtime, when it goes into the safe and the Colt comes out. I've been tempted to have my newly acquired hi-cap Glock 19 pull a few shifts on guard duty, but I'm not as familiar with it (yet!) as I am the Colt. I know the 91' backwards and forwards, plus I'll confess that I love the thumb safety, which the Glock doesn't have.

I voted high cap 9 but as others have said, it depends on what part of the house I happen to be in.

Bedroom is high cap 9.

Living room is usually a compact 1911 style 45 ACP.

Gun room is a short barreled 357 revolver.

Vehicle is usually a compact 9.

I won't go easy!

David.

Primary gun is a 3rd generation Glock 17 (9mm) with 17rd magazines. Loaded with high quality hollow point ammo. Plus M3 light attached to the gun.

Back up gun is a short barrelled 12ga Rem. 870.
