"home defence . on a budget. .. shotgun. 12g. 00 buck .. you can get a used mossberg 500 , rem 870. or some of the cheap double coach guns. look around for a cheap 18 in barrel for the pump guns. i paid 50 bucks for the one on my mossberg. there realy is no better home defence weapon. my handguns are a backup gun for home defence. for me it is the 500 .. 18.5 barrel. 5 rounds of 00 buck. and my 1911 with 7 rounds of hydroshocks. . the shot gun is on my side the bed. and the 1911 is on my wifes. . and yes she knows how to use it. "

FORGET 00 Buck shot!!!!!! use 7-8 field shot, YOU WILL shoot thru multiple walls with 00 Buck and possibly hit family members or your neighbors house.

Buy Hornady TAP if you have the extra money, but field shot is all you need.

I watched one video from 2nd Amendement (one that was EXCELLENT for content, watched many others) where they shot different loads thru drywall to simulate shooting in your house... shoot "low" power loads that are designed for home defense with any home defense gun.

You are only shooting 5-20 feet, your not trying to down a bear at 200 yards with one shot.

Buying a home defence gun is something you want to work every time and esp when you have an emergency. Save up the extra money and buy a gun thats not falling apart.

Too expensive? It looks like it was made in a garage to me. A cheap, preferably rusted steak knife would be even better though. Maybe OJ's if it's done being evidence yet.

I don't know if I can take another dog right now, this one is killing me with his inability to become housebroken. He's a year old now and still won't learn. He keeps giving us some hope, then just crapping and pissing indoors anyway. He is rapidly becoming an outdoor dog and now that my daughter was born in January I don't have time to scrub the floor every day, he is working his way out of the house for good.

Home defense, at least for firearmes, does not need to break the bank.

On the high end a Gander Mountian Sig P6 or Walther P1 (both in 9mm) can be had for very little over $300. I've shot both and they are excellent.

On the lower end, a Bersa .380, used, can be found for $250. And a FEG 9x18 auto I just saw yesterday for $208.

There are even imports like the CZ 83, in either .380 or 9x18. Not expensive at all and the ammo is still cheep.

On the rifle side an 'Assault' lever action is the way to go. Marlin or Mossburg (Winchesters cost to much due to being collector items now days.)

Shotguns? The simple plain Mossburg 12 guage 18 inch barrel shotgun is the way to go. I see examples all the time for less than $200. Just add a tac-star side saddle and away you go.

Even going top end, a Walther P1, used Marlin 30/30, and a Mossburg 18 inch barrel 12 will set you back about $700! 9mm, 30/30, and 12 guage can be found anywhere to.

-Trim shrubs away from door and window areas.

-Pea gravel, under windows, on sidewalks, porches, under windows, etc/.
The "scrunch" sound is very distinct and singles one not only someone is outside, also assists in pin pointing where they actually are.

Besides Pea gravel, cat litter works for instance. Sometimes a store with a busted bag will sell it really cheap, or just give it away.

- Light sensor that screws into exterior light base, then the light bulb screws into this sensor. This allows one to turn on that exterior light, but it will not turn "on" until it becomes dark.
So if you arrive home after dark, the exterior light is already on.

- Timers for interior of structure, for not only lights, also a radio and/or TV.

-Baby Monitors.
Check yard sales, and Thrift Stores.

These can be used to hear what is going on in another part of the house, and even placed on front /back porches , hidden to hear what is going on.

-Larger Peephole.

-Mirrors mounted exterior, to allow one to see blind spots looking through blinds.

For starters.

<snaps fingers>

Darn! I did not mention one firearm related thing!

*phooey*

I do live in a older home where NO one can step onto either front or back without viberating the entire home. (No it's not a mobile home)

Something I found useful way back in trucking where if you so much as touch a full airride 18 wheeler, you will wake me up from a sound sleep from the variance in the suspension.

For too many years folks had :

-a single shot, two barrel, or pump shotgun gun that did everything from protect the home and property to putting meat on the table.

-a handgun that was carried on person while answering the door, working in the yard, going for a walk, heading to town...

-a .22 rifle for teaching , fun, hunting small game, dispatching pests on the property.

-a lever action , or bolt rifle, depending on what part of the country and what kind of larger game, and habitat. Lever actions felled deer, black bear and hawgs for instance in "brush country" , where the bolt saw duty for "beanfield" or "plains" use.

Folks did not have a lot of money, there was no credit cards. They might have a Ledger they used at the mom and pop hardware, grocery, fillin' station...that was paid off on pay day.

Folks made do, did without, or patched up.

Lay-a-way was used often.

Folks would actually shoot various guns, or use various pocketknives, or anything else, to see how they handled and if they fit them and their tasks.

Then they saved up and bought, or made a down payment and did lay-a-way, or had arrangements for using that Ledger.

Some Firearm Companies, like Winchester, offered payments plans - pretty much lay-a-way or ledgers for the local hardware, fishing, outdoor, type stores.

Not much has really changed, except marketing and credit, in regard to home defense on a budget.

Still back in the day, the crunch of gravel or chat told folks someone was coming up the drive, the porch step, and porch had that squeak on purpose, as did the screen door.

Window fans were secured from the inside, and widows could only be raised so much, as there were holes drilled into the track and a heavy nail to prevent being raised any higher, along with a broomstick.

At night, that "T" handled bar was placed into the hole in the hardwood floor, up snug against the door, to assist with the locks of the day to keep someone from coming in.

During the day, nobody saw the two holes, as the inside mat kept it covered
The second hole allowed the door to be cracked a bit, for air circulation, as there was no fancy air conditioning...

This set up was often used in rural areas "down the road" from prisons and towns with a "bigger jail".

Still many home had "hardware store" guns, like a H&R .38spl revolver, H&R .22 revolver and H&R Topper.

Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Ward Catalog, also outfitted many a home as well.

Of course folks reading Field & Stream would take a pocket knife, cut out an Ad tape it to a postcard or maybe spent the extra postage for a postage stamp on a envelope and use a piece of stationary and order a gun. Then the Postman brought them their gun C.O.D.

They knew what time the Postman came around, and the scrunch of gravel coming up the drive/ walk, the squeaky porch step, the squeaky porch told them someone was outside and many a Postman was greeted by a someone standing at the doorway - screen door closed, and " I heard ya coming, you are a bit early today and ..."

It was uphill both ways, I believe.

Don't forget the trusty sentinel, aka "the Dawg". They hear the gravel crunch before you do, and let anyone know they mean business and are ten feel tall with huge fangs and all sorts of viciousness. My Old English Sheepdog literally rattles the windows with his bark, and when that huge white polar bear head pops up into view people tend to stop at the steps and wait instead of knocking. He's no biter though, if the person actually came in he'd just be jumping all over them looking for treats...

Don't forget SM... they had to do it barefoot, uphill in the winter.

Yeah it was tough carrying them skool lessons on stone tablets, uphill, both ways, barefoot in the snow, in the hot, humid south in late August, I tell ya...

Had to sharpen our own chisels to do lessons for skool...

Progress come along, and we had to get our own turkeys to make our own quills for our pens we dipped in inkwells...

Oh at least we got to melt lead in little crucibles to make boolits for our guns when it was too nasty to go outside for recess...

Does every generation think the one before thiers was better, and the new one sucks?

As far as the OP and HD... Software is more important then hardware. But hardware helps!

I've got a Savage 12-gauge side-by-side double that serves nicely as a home defense weapon. It sits under the bed at all times, jut in case. I got it 45 years ago, I'll bet, for, if I recall correctly, $40. That's a pretty good example, I think, of home defense on a budget.

Pawnshop Mossberg 500 in 12 or 20ga,

High-capacity 9mm Police dept trade-in.

My .02...

I don't know if it's still available but a company was selling The Door Club a few years ago, that was the same principle.

Does every generation think the one before theirs was better, and the new one sucks?

Only for those whom seek curmudgeonhood.

Which reminds me, I have not received my diploma from Old Fuff as of yet.

We do agree on Software, not Hardware .

Blackmail, bribery and cheatin' will outdo youth and skill any day of the week

These suggestions aren't guns, but this is what I am doing as soon as the construction folks are done with my new siding.
1. Auto motion sensor flood lights. Since the walkway to my house is so narrow, I bought the 110' motion sensor and some flood lights.
Bought window locks for my 1 sliding window, so anyone who wants in has to break the glass, which I will hear and the dog will hear.
Dog. Best. Alarm. Evar. And I mean Evar.
Then I went to the dollar store and picked up this battery operated magnetic thingy which sounds off a loud LOUD alarm if the mag strip is taken from the sound device. Hooked that up to my door, was kinda hard to place because its a door and 2 walls around it, nothing really to mount it on, so I used the bottom. Tested it and it works great.
I still want to pick up this door stopper that is rubber on both ends, so if someone tries to kick in your door, they pretty much will bruise their body trying.
And if all that fails, I would know its not a random burglary. I got plenty of hollow points and hardballs waiting. And it all gives me time to call the cops.

kyo,

Welcome to THR!

Are you nuts!
Don't you read teh Intraw3bz ?!?!

No,no,no...no.

Software, not Hardware is soooo old fashioned and antiquated.

They have Hardware, which is Guns, ammo and everything now you can buy, and magically evil stays away.

Yeah really!
And, and if evil should show up anyway, all this tack-tickle stuff with curb feelers, fuzzy dice, poster of latest hot babe/studpuppy, exotic ammo and all, will magically take care of evil all by its self.
Its twue, its twue, I read it on teh Intraw3bz !

Get with the program, this is 2009!

Oh don't forget, it does not matter if you reside in Texas or not, just tell everyone how the law is in TX and you are good to go.

Re: Budget?
That is a Rental Car place.
Heck, divorce the spouse, sell one of the kids to have money for more hardware...

Welcome to THR, but you gots lots to learn...

I disagree. Anything that can be relied on to stop a human is also going to penetrate tons of layers of drywall. Drywall is really soft stuff. A BB gun will go through it.

SM... for the record... I was referring to me. I am 40, and it seems as though my generation has not done too much to improve the world.

If I really wanted to be cheap: I'd probably mossberg's cheap shotgun they sell, a hi-point or military surplus handgun, and spend the rest on an alram system. If that's a lot, I could get the real deal, if not, you could get some stand-alone motion detectors to put on the stairs and some door or windor ones. Or both, in case one doesn't work.

use 7-8 field shot
That will probably lack stopping pwoer. I'd see how thick your walls are and do some experiments on sheetrock or the like. Use the biggest shot that won't go through. (It will still probably lack stopping power)

That duct taped pistol on the first page is an airsoft. You can see the orange cap on the end
