Home Defense Shotgun

Actually, I think "Couch Gun" might be a better term for it in modern times than "Coach Gun". I bet people are a lot more likely to need a home defense shotgun when sitting on a couch than riding on a coach.

That is unless you meant to reer to a specific breed of shotgun desgined for killing rampant couches (a la "elephant gun"). This sounds silly until you have seen some of the heaps of padding that are in use in a good-sized college town.

There are a lot more bells and whistles available for the Remington 870, like stocks, barrels, sight systemd, magazine extensions, etc. But, any shotgun, 12, 16, 20, The Cheney Special (28), or .410 in about any configuration will work, and work better with a shorter barrel. Ranges are close, and manuverability is extreemly important here.

A double or even a single would be fine also for HD.

Without hijacking the post, how you deploy your weapon depends totally on your situation, both tactical and residential. I use a layered defence here in rural Texas. Pistol, then shotgun, then rifle. My primary shotgun is a "dream come true for me" Benelli M1 Super 90. It will shoot a 4" group at 100 yards with Tactical slugs all day, so it replaces the rifle in the medium range arena. I still would never feel under armed with a decent 12 or 20 gauge pump shotgun, and securitysixshooter (I like your choice in revolver!) you have named a bunch of good ones. Just mu $.02

Thats partially why I bought my 1901...Now hold on, I know bout all the things that make a HD gun a HD gun,but what about the criminal...Heres a guy thats pretty much screwed things up royal. I figure to load up some BP OOB loads. Felt wads ,the whole nine yards. I look at it this way, being hammered by a classic like that might be as close as he ever came to anything worth while. Its like the hurse being a 100,000+ car, that even the scum get a last ride in...Secondly a lousy event like a home invasion should have some element of fun to it. By the time I whale off those 6 BP loads. Nobodies goin to be able to see their hand afore their face.Great hoot I figure

I prefer the 1300 as it has a smoother action out of the box, and when I field stripped my 20 gauge 870 it did not want to go back together easily. I expect that to change once I have a couple thousand rounds through it.

That being said, both of my 1300s lost the mag cap detent right after the first time shooting them. There is a gunsmith locally that does warranty work on them and he's so backed up, it takes at least 3 weeks per fix. Also, the 1300 is not being manufactured anymore.

So, unless you are a masochist, I'd recommend the 870 over the 1300.

Give me a 20!

I don't know how many 12 guage shotguns I have around here, I've lost track of them. A few old SxS's a bunch of break action single shots and one old long barrel pump I could pole vault with.

I don't like shooting any of them. The SxS whack my fingers so bad that after 15 or 20 rounds I can't shoot for a week. Same for the single shots, but add shoulder pain.

I've decided to limit my home defense shotgun to a 20 guage 870 with the rifled barrel and buckshot. A friend is giving me just such an old gun for some work I've done for her, and I'm going to leave it just as it is, blemishes and all. It's mechanically sound, will do the job and I really feel no need for all the tacticool stuff people put on their shotguns. I might have a flashlight handy, but not mounted on my gun. Just my opinion. I've worked in darkrooms for photography for over 30 years...I figure in low light I sort of have an advantage.

If the dog, the mean wife, the three pistols, the shotgun and the Mosin won't do the job...I must have really Pi**ed someone off bad!
