SHREVEPORT -- An 18-year-old man who forcibly entered a Cedar Grove residence is dead after a man inside gained control of the intruder's assault-style rifle and shot him multiple times in the upper torso, according to a Shreveport police news release.

Authorities have identified the dead man as Jeremy Bell, address not immediately available.

Martin Gobert, 23, was beaten about his head and upper body with the rifle before turning the gun on his attacker, authorities said.

While Gobert was recovering at LSU Hospital in Shreveport, police obtained a warrant to arrest Jerome Hughes, 23, of the 200 block of East Gregg Street in Shreveport, on one count of home invasion.

The investigation began just before 11 a.m., when police received a report of a burglary in the 100 block of West 79th Street, then another call describing the incident as an assault.

Officers found Bell's bullet-riddled body lying in a front room and Gobert wounded.

"We seized (an assault-style rifle) from the house, but we aren't sure if it's the one that was used during the shooting," Shreveport police Cpl. Bill Goodin said.

Initial interviews and evidence collected suggests Hughes knocked on the door of Gobert's residence and Bell, who was armed with a rifle, was hiding behind Hughes. When Gobert answered the door, Bell forced his way inside in an attempt to rob Gobert.

I haven't seen a thread about the invader bringing an EBR, kudos to the homeowner. So what would you guys do if the bg brings a gun?

When there's someone in my house after hours who shouldn't be, I assume he's the evil offspring of Jeffrey Dahmer and Hannibal Lecter armed with a minigun, intending to molest everything in the house up to and including the houseplants.

Doesn't change a thing if they are armed or not, the procedure is the same.

It's written by a newspaper journalist. That "assault-style rifle" could be a 10-22 or a hi-point carbine.
Somebody must have never told him guns are for shooting, not hitting. One less bad guy though. Sounds like the "good guy" may not have been an angel himself if you read page 2 of the story. Could have been a past customer.

Not open the door, and be armed myself.

LOL...get off my [strike]lawn[/strike] ornamental bush you... :D

I think it'a a good idea to assume that anyone at your door that you don't recognize, especially at night, is armed and up to no good. If it turns out you were wrong, no damage done. (That is if you didn't start shooting indiscriminately:)).
