home-made steel targets

Don't use mild steel! - it will pock and crater and make the target unsafe.

Use hardened steel instead.

Also, I've used some good stationary steel targets for shotgun that had angled faces that were angled downwards about 15 degrees, that way the chance of having splatter come straight back at you is reduced.

I did that recently. I bought a 12' x 1' piece of T1 and took it to work and used the Piranha metal shear to cut it into 1' squares and punch holes for hanging. $200+ tax for 12 targets that will take any handgun cartridge this side of a .454.

I was going to cut it into shapes, but I figured that if I hang it point up, it was a decent approximation of a torso.

+1 on NOT using mild steel. Tried that, and lets just say that shooting into a cereal bowl tends to give you some interesting bounces.
