Home owner's insurance

I wouldn't buy insurance from a company that wanted a detailed list. You can purchase a rider from State Farm that gives you coverage for $5K. NRA provides another $1K of coverage to its members for no charge.

Make sure you keep a list w/serial numbers and photos and sales receipts if possible in a safe place in case you do have a loss so you have proof.

State Farm quoted me a rather high figure to insure my firearms. They will insure them with a rider to the homeowners policy. It is not a problem. In my case, they wanted serial numbers and descriptions of each firearm insured. Cheaper to buy a safe. 5K is a bit low. That might be one gun. Same applies to art work. Insurance is expensive for collectables.

This thread really has me thinking.
The reason is my home owners insurance is up for renewel as I type this and it is currently with Travelers and has been for several years now.
Unfortunately the price has increased significantly over last years renewel and I dont doubt hurricane Ike played into that.
Still.......
So since they have gone up so much it's time to get some direct answers from them about my firearms and possibly look else where.

We've got Allstate with an optional Personal Articles Floater designated specifically in the contract as firearms. The floater is $25,000 and costs me $82.00 a year. The cost and terms have not changed in almost ten years and the valuation in case of loss will be "replacement value" as determined by market conditions at the time of claim. That is written into the contract in plain language at my insistence - a result of my distrust of all things 'insurance'. There's no deductible applied to that floater and the agent didn't care or require an itemized listing even though he's got one anyway as well as a disk I update from time to time with photographs on it and placed in our file in his office.

I was glad that I'd asked at my wife's advise because I had had an attitude that it would be a mistake to mention firearms to an insurance agent. But my attitude was born of fifty years of California living, and I'm in a different country now. :)

Another vote for USAA.
I have home/auto with them. Everything covered to my satisfaction. Riders needed on certain things, and price of riders beat prices of riders quoted by all USAA's major competitors.

I had to list each firearm, serial number and value for a rider on my policy.

I wanted to avoid giving out a detailed list of my firearms, so I chose NRA's ArmsCare Plus.

Only firearms $2,500 or over must be scheduled but serial numbers are not required.

State farm,..I have their basic coverage that includes my firearms,..and a rider for additional coverges over and above their basic level. I have never been asked to list what firearms I own.

My impression is that State Farm wants the information when the values are high and the total value is high as well. How high is high? Not sure. Overall, I have been very satisfied with State Farm. Have a lot of insurance with them and have had more in the past.

I think I have 5k on firearms (the max) on homeowners policies. They would make us take out another line if I needed more. No questions asked about what I owned, just whether the 2.5k would cover it or not. It was really inexpensive to do. I use State Farm.

Another vote for State Farm. In the event of a loss, they're one of the best companies at responding and paying up (some other companies will nickel and dime you and look for any way possible to avoid paying anything).

I am a Germania adjuster and also have my home insured by Germania. I have asked the claims supervisor about this and was told firearms are covered up to the personal property limits. Guns are just personal property like a tv or tools or anything else. All of the Germania corperate heads are big gun enthusiest and they host an annual dove hunt with several guns given as prizes.

In my case I have $90.000.00 in coverage on personal property and so the same on my guns. I would need to show proof of ownership and a police report. The deductible would be the same. In the case a clause 2 deductible of $500.00.

The down side to Germania is they are a Texas only company. Also they limit the number of insureds they have in an area. Most of the time you have to get on a waiting list to apply for coverage. People don't normally cancel their coverage. You pretty much have to wait on someone to die for a slot to open up.

I have state farm renter's insurance and I'm pretty sure my firearms are automatically covered for at least a few grand. (I don't have much more than a grand or two anyways).

I have an old Allstate policy (it's a $500 deductible = that's how old it is) and they make no distinction relative to personal property, which is covered up to 20%. They seem to be pretty easy to deal with on the policy details, adding any riders, etc. Its in Texas so that may help.

I also love USAA. They have things I wish they would change, but overall I am very, very pleased with them. I would be really surprised if I ever changed either insurance companies or banks.

I asked about coverage under USAA. The rep said that $2,000 was the limit

Your experience with USAA is very much different than mine.

USAA doens't have an automatic policy where I'm at... I think you better check again. The policy to cover firearms is specific, and not included unless you ask and pay for it...
you are also required to list all guns with serial numbers..

they will also not insure guns under either $400 or $500 in value.

I got a little bent out of shape with them recently over a quote on a new home... but as long as you are not in Houston, I guess they are OK.. if you do move to Houston by chance, get ready for a quote that is 3X your current payment....

...different zip code and state, different policy terms

This must be the key here. It seems that jakemccoy is right - lots of people here are having different experiences with USAA's terms.

they will also not insure guns under either $400 or $500 in value.

I have guns under that on my policy.

you are also required to list all guns with serial numbers..

I believe they prefer it, but I know I have some guns on my policy that they do not have the SN's to.

I have a rider for some guns with USAA. For me they required very detailed descriptions including serials.

I also have USAA, but again I have gotten it clarified many times that they require a rider for specific guns for additional coverage. There is a $10,000 policy covering damages (not theft) but even then they require a list at least afterthefact.

My homeowners insurance only covers up to $1,000 theft only. They wanted $1.16 per $100 of coverage and wanted a detailed list of firearms. I got a online quite from Collectibles insurance and the NRA Arms Care Plus. Neither of which would require a list of firearms. My homeowners would be double the cost of Collectibles and NRA Arms Care Plus would be triple.

Going to Call collectibles tomorrow and get some more information on them.

"Although an inventory is not always required at the time of application to purchase insurance, we strongly recommend maintaining an inventory to provide proof and expedite claims in the event of a loss. "

Off there home page.

They are not ver clear on the issure. On the PDF application it ask if you have an inventory and if so please attach it. If no why not.

I will discuss this issure with them on the phone.

Farmers Insurance has/had a "basic" limit in their Homeowner's Policy of $2500. We were able to get an additional rider for $20,000 and it didn't cost hardly anything. We're with Allstate now, and this reminded me it's time to check our current policy since we moved. Thanks for nudging my brain.

home ins with firearms

Most people here seem to be asking about insuring their firearms against theft....as a new firearms owner, do I need to cover myself against liability for owning a gun? I also have a renter on my property who owns guns.

I only have the one, so am not concerned about insuring it...but do I need to inform my insurer, Allstate, that I have a gun?

After my 15 yr old Chessie passes, I'll probably be buying a more protective dog too, and so far, Allstate has not asked about dogs. I dont plan on updating them on new arrivals!
