Home range rifle target ideas?

I’ve got a home range and I’m working on my rifle targets. I’ve got 100-400 covered with IDPA silhouettes and a turkey, all out of AR500. I’m now working on ideas for a 500 meter target. I’ve installed the berm, now looking for steel. My initial idea was to go with a full size ram in order to practice for silhouette, but after springing for the full size turkey, I’m thinking the ram might be a little much ($$). Plus, with the turkey I need a spotter or raked berm, till I’m on the steel, it will just be worse at 500.

I’m toying with the idea of an 18x24 plate, with a smaller circle (8”) mounted in the middle using a long bolt and a spring. I’ve mounted my IDPA silhouettes similarly and they ring like a bell when hit. This would put the circle a few inches off the 18x24 plate and make painting the plate white, circle black, a lot easier.

Anybody have any ideas? Pictures of targets and mounts appreciated.

Cool video and good looking reactive target. I’m not too concerned with portability as I’ve already set up the berm for the target and a couple shooting areas. I’m really looking for a larger target to enable getting on steel faster, then a smaller inner target to practice on.

I shot a similar setup once at Alliance NE with BPCRs and was trying to see if anybody had detailed pictures of something similar.

For some reason, I like the idea of a buffalo shilloutte (plywood) with a vitals area cut out and a plate installed there. I could see that being a lot of fun with cast boolits.

Hmm, my late uncle was fond of a bit of idiocy that involved a 55 gal oil drum. A steel plate was hinged on the side of the drum with steel pin that rested against the primer of a 12 gauge shotshell loaded only with wadding. When the plate was hit the shotshell would fire and the pressure would push finely ground hog feed into the air.

No one could argue a hit at 500 meters with the device.

While I like the concept, I think the issue would be spotting the shots that would impact the plywood. At 500 meters, it's tough to see the holes even with my Kowa on 60X, if there's even a little mirage, it's hopeless. I have shot full size steel Buffalo silhouettes, but .45-70 and .45-100 BPCRs.

So somebody had to go out a reload it after every hit?
