In todays climate with dwindeling jobs and political feuds what have you done to "upgrade" your homestead security? I dont mean just new deadbolts or home alarm..your homestead goes farther than your front and back doors. it doesnt make much sense to cc and not think of security right outside your doors and windows!
My homestead is 15 acres in deep southern woods. A nice garden and livestock out back, seperate storage building for food and supplies. Being in the woods though doesnt keep me safe. Recently the big trend is to drop your dog off in farm country when you cant afford to feed it any more. Once or twice a year this would happen before. Now its once or twice a week! I hate to say it but the majority of us "farmers" shoot strays because we are tired of loosing livestock and patching up our own dogs who get into scuffs with feral dog packs. How long till people see this area as an opportunity for themselves and not just their former "pets"!
what I have done beyond my front door is create easy walk paths for intruders to funnel them where I want them for easier shots from me and less cover or concealment for them. I got lucky when a friend was replacing all his barbed wire fence so i agreed to take the old stuff to the dump for him *wink* instead it went into my wooded buffer area between the dirt road and front yard. All strung out through the under brush makes it very hard to walk or sneak through.
Dogs of course are very important. I have 3 so I poison proofed them with an electric fence transformer. Use any MOIST food you want. Place it in the yard were the dog can find it run an insulated line from the transformer to the food. You may have to insulate it from the ground with dry grass or such. Let the dog find it on his own. Never feed them outside only inside. The dogs have access all the way around the home so they go out 15 min before I do in the morning. Plenty of time to detect / incapasitate an intuder and alert me. 1 always stays in until I am ready to walk out. These are just a few simple things I have done.
There are many simple cheap cost effective things we can all do to make our homestead more secure. A fence more lighting trim the bushes next to your doors and windows ect.
I have learned much from others insight. Someone else might have an idea or thought of a weakness you didnt. So lets hear your ideas!

I thought I recently read somewhere that crime was actually declining despite the economy. Either way, sounds like your system is pretty intense. Any thoughts on security cameras or a laser trigger that flips a signal to alert you to cars entering your land?

comes down to a manning issue

The larger and more obvious your security measure the more people see that you think that you have something to steal

A military fire base is rather secure, nothing approaches within the kill zone, or it dies, but it takes HUGE manpower to keep it that secure. Short of SHTF which we dont do here.... I see no reason to make yourself stand out from the guy up the street and down the street.

Good point Shadow 7d. Thats one reason why I chose not to get video surveillance on my property. I had a guy come out and show me several different security packages. Several had surveillance with dvr recording set ups in addition to an alarm. I thought it would be a good idea to be able to keep an eye on the blindspots around my home. Then I thought about that anyone passing by would see the cameras and possibly wonder what I may have that I need that measure of security for. I thought that it could possibly make me more of a target for a burglary/home invasion compared to the other homes on my street.

Hello friends and neighbors // I put a few fairly nice but cheap yard sale items on the front porch. If they get stolen I know we have that type in the area and alert the neighbors.

I have also rigged the doors/openings of several obvious key hiding spots so I can see if they have been searched. ( I don't hide a spare key)
I have lived here five years and these spots have been searched three times, also alerted the neighbors.

I had a friend come out and point out weak spots.

We moved a small metal table and chairs to prevent someone comming around the corner of the house onto the porch unnoticed while I opened the front door.

He also recommended a curtain over the small window in the front door to prevent perps looking in.

There's a good book by Rawels that has lots of practical advice. I forget the name but I'm sure you can find it on Amazon.

Well...

well i dont have plans for ROW guns or anything like that..I was focusing on the less obvious.. Small driveway monitor.. No hidding/ambush places close to your entry exit points..ect. Razor wire would be nice but obvious and lawyer freindly.. Many cc and think of muggings at the mall.bank ..on and on..not many think of front door to car..if I wanted someone the place imho to get them is 0630 at the front door on monday when they leave for work with coffee and newspaper in hand... MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Well the difference between a field of fire and no mans land, and well manicured lawn is how it's mowed, and how often.

there are lots of things you can do, such as planting yucca, swordleaf, holly (the bigger the stickers the better) or even a nice rose bed under windows, providing both beauty, no place to hide and a prickly form of security. Google it, lots of info, lots of it here, remember for every decision there is a cost and a benefit.

No cameras but I do have a driveway monitor inside a false birdhouse..gives audible signal on man size and up.

A good driveway alarm , Hidden cameras in Bird Houses or yard art. Some hidden lock ups out doors in your out buildings with a cell phone and charger, pistol, rifle or shotgun and ammo.
