Today I placed an order for a Vepr 7.62x54r 23" today, only $800. Hopefully in about 10 days I'll be able to pick up my new shiny russian rifle.

Unfortunately I have learned that the company I ordered from might not actually have it in stock.

So here's hoping that they do! Any advice on milsurp 54r?

If you haven't viewed the Military Arms Channel Vepr video on youtube you might watch it. IIRC, the Vepr can digest heavy and light ball ammo equally. As I gaze about, I find that the milsurp available is the light ball, and is corrosive, so be sure to clean appropriately. The guy who gives those reviews had positive remarks for the Vepr.

Welcome to the club, we are always looking for new members! I have a LGS that usually has pretty good pricing on milsurp 7.62x54r. I bought a spam can of Romanian for $90 about a month ago. AIM surplus usually has pretty good pricing as well, but you'll have to pay shipping costs of course.

I noticed you are in Oregon, do you have Dunham's Sporting Goods there? I have picked a few spam cans at Dunham's over the years and they have been in the $110 range. Good luck with your new rifle!

If you can catch Copes Distributing with 54R in stock, they sell it for $90 per can and they have $10 flat shipping for everything so you could get two cans for 190 w/ shipping. Also as far as milsurp, read up on corrosive ammo and how to clean it up after shooting.

Congrats and hope it comes in! I've had a PSL and a M44. You'll like the 7.62x54r!

Keep us updated on things. We like range reports and pics!;)

I've worked it out. I need to go through 2400 rounds to make the 54r pay for itself.

Truth be told, though, I need to get a gun vice so I can bench and sight in my rifles better. Any reasonably priced recomendations?

The cheapest for me usually seems to be the gunshows because shipping is so much on ammo.

What kind of magazine availability is there for these? I really need a semi in 54r.

The accuracy varies with ammo batches, manufacturing plant and year. but my 54r vepr will consistently ring a 10 in gong at a little under a hundred yards with surplus, but once you add a scope the vepr is HEAVY

I reload for all my 54R rifles....if you do that you will be very happy with what they can do.

Only thing I shoot surplus in are the bolt rifles.

I unfortunately do not have access to a range longer than a hundred yards so I can't say as heavy as the barrel is and the thicker reciever I would hope it could produce repeatable hits at that range, By the way I am in envious of your price I bought mine when they first came out for over $1000.

That sounds like an attractive rifle, especially with the price of 7.62*54R, and the lack of PSL rifles, heck I'd rather have a Vepr anyhow. I'm just sore because I missed the boat on 500 dollar PSLs, I remember taking the ramblings of several naysayers to heart, and watched them go by, should have got one just for kicks, but these Veprs are very aesthetically pleasing rifles, and solid performers from what I gather.

I like the VEPR rifles better than the PSL. And it seems like a great price you're getting it at. I'm mildly jealous.

Received an Email from the company I ordered from. It seems "in warehouse" means "Not in stock, no ETA, No backorders" So no vepr for me.

I'm surprisingly bummed out about this.

I could, however, get a square receiver 23" for 1199 from centerfiresystems. No bloody way, as they've had so many problems with the square receiver wood breaking that they actually include that as part of the gun description. And $400 more puts it well out of my pricerange.

I'll keep my eyes open, as I really want one, but it looks like they've mostly dried up, especially the slant-cut receiver varients.

I really like my Vepr 54r. Bought it from Centerfire a month or so ago for $799.00. Has the integrated sights and 20" barrel. Atlantic Firearms posted that they will be getting some Vepr's in around the 1st of June or so. You might sign up to be notified when they arrive. Don't know what the pricing will be.
