I was a week late to get in on the CMMG bargain bin (too bad -- seemed like the best thing going!), but I decided to finally take the plunge on my first AR by ordering a lower from Anvil, about which I have so far heard only good things.

A lower + parts kit (no stock) is currently on sale for $175 (vs. $220), and that's what I sent email today intending to order. Until I get a thumbs up from Jon at Anvil, I won't say I've actually *placed* my order, but I think I've included all the info they need, incl. the image I want laser-engraved :) (I'll post pics if it turns out as I hope.)

So, for making my first AR, I'm soliciting advice about uppers, sights, stocks ... but I'll also be trawling through plenty of *other* people's questions and existing advice on those, too. Maybe next year it'll get a sibling, and I suspect that will be my lifetime collection of ARs ;) (Though the ability to swap uppers makes that statement only partly true.)

Go ahead and have them engrave your name, city, and state on the receiver while you're at it. Then, send in your Form 1. After that, build what ever you want - including a 10.5"

+1 for Anvil

doesn't the ATF requirement for engraving involve a certain depth unlikely to be achieved by laser etching?

I agree. I have not done anything with my lower and parts kit yet, but it is very nice. I was well pleased and Jon is good to deal with.

I have two AR's on Anvil lowers, actually one was built by Jon at Anvil, the other is a Del-ton kit on an Anvil lower.

The lowers are great and so is Anvil Arms.

Jon is a great guy, very well informed and a good businessman.

I believe many of the surplus arms entering this country are laser-engraved with the importer's marks and seem to meet ATF specs. If memory serves, the engraving is only required to be .003" deep.

I hope the whole process goes nice and smoothly -- Jon was quick to respond to emails, and to dash my hopes on one count -- only one side of the receiver can be laser engraved, too bad ;) Oh, well, saves me $10 I suppose. However, it appears my order is truly in progress.

I may wait for a gunshow this summer to seek out the best prices I can find on stock and an upper; might order some of CMMG's 30-round mags, though.

I've heard this as well. I know my suppressors appear to be laser engraved, but I have also heard that if you are dealing with thin metal (like the aluminum body of a can) you can get written permission from the ATF to laser engrave. All of this is internet hearsay . . . I've read about the .003" depth, I just don't know how deep laser engraving goes or how to go about measuring such.

I've got one of Jon's lowers I'm building a pistol out of. I had "Peace through superior firepower" engraved around a peace sign. I guess I need to get photos.

I didn't have a too good of success trying to buy from Jon. It was my understanding that he had a lot of gun shows at the time.

I bought a RRA lower from an outfit in NC that had them in stock.

He was doing a lot of shows at the time I dealt with him, but he always responded, and always let me know when he was unavailable. No big deal.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the great comments!! I really appreciate it!! And I promise, I'll keep working hard to keep earning them!

One word about shopping for bargains on gun parts at gun shows. Make sure your not sacrificing quality for a lower price.

There are lots of people selling parts at the same shows I am at for less than I charge and I can honestly say, that they are all of much less quality. We try to insure that nobody can sell the same quality parts as us for less. Occasionally for the same price, but not less. We do this by getting the very best parts available and selling them at a very low margin.

Consider this; A bargain on a junk part is no bargain at all. Especially if it craps out when you really need it.

Thanks again for the compliments!

Keep up the good work Jon. When I accumulate the money, I am buying from you.

Great, I'll be standing by!

Tips for saving money to buy more guns:

Quit eating for a couple weeks. Most of us are overweight these days and can stand a few days away from the table.

Turn off the electricity at the house, tell the wife you want to practice more primitive living for awhile, "Just in case"

Park the car/truck and walk. With fuel prices like they are today, a couple days of walking and you should be ready to order. the exercise will help drop some of those extra pounds mentioned in the first suggestion.

Work 2x as many hours. You don't have power at home so there is no TV to watch and your not eating anymore so you have plenty of extra time to work more hours.

:what:OK, so some of those ideas may not exactly work real well, but on the other hand.....lol...

I'll be standing by, whenever your ready.

I'm going to be starting a build on a new 7.62X39mm AR, to compliment the Bushmaster .223 and .308 AR's I have. This will be my first complete build, but I've researched it enough to be confident in doing it.

My lower will definately be an Anvil Arms lower... Not only are the prices reasonable, but FREE laser etching? Can't beat it. Plus, I've never seen ANY negative comments about the company nor the product.

Keep up the good work!

Kruger, this is you, correct?

What is the benefit(s) of the Anvil lowers?

You can't use an upper without one? I don't think I understand the question.

Anvil offers free (or is it low-cost) laser engraving on their lowers, which are supposedly pretty darn good, even without the engraving. Having it done all in one place saves you from having to find an engraver later.

VA: LOL... there was a whole thread on that a little while back... wasn't there... LOL... oh, and shamelessly... been there, done that, probably doin' it again soon...

Jon -- your prices are indeed great, part of why I ordered a lower+parts kit rather than (as I'd been intending to earlier) simply a bare lower. I'm a little more confident in selecting a quality stock than I am in selecting and installing the internals, and the upper I'm going to decide on carefully.

I'm certainly considering one of the complete carbines as well, but that's a few months out at least :)

BTW, it's mostly through word of mouth here on THR, and because of your presence here, that I settled on Anvil. Would also rather support a small company than large, all other things being equal.

Heard a ton of good things about Anvil Arms and John in particular on various forums - to my mind, it's one thing to have a great product but it's a different kettle of fish to have a reputation for outstanding customer-service as well.

When I'm ready to build or buy my first AR, I'll be having a word.
