I have used this before and also nitro solvent a lot before, my question is will Hopes #9 clean out copper fouling well? The bottle says removes metal or something, but makes no mention of copper specifically.
Yes it will, but it is slow acting. Not really a bad thing IMO, some copper solvents are very caustic and will eat your firearm's or your stock's finish if you aren't extremely careful. I've ruined a few wood stock finishes with foaming bore cleaners.
If you run some wet patches through and let it sit for 8 hours, or overnight, the patches will come out heavily blue/green.
Hoppes works, but is very slow. There are much better solvents out there IMO such as Butches, the foams mentioned, Sweets, Montana Xtreem, JB (a slight abrasive) or even Hoppes Benchrest cleaner.
The old #9 is great on carbon but doesn`t have whet it takes to effectivly remove copper, except over time. Some I`ve talked to in the past left the bore damp with Hoppesafter cleaning out the carbon and wiped before shooting weeks or more later giving it more time to work om metal. The newer cleaners do much more in a afternoon then #9 accomplishes in a week.
Boretech Eliminator works very fast, but it doesn't reek of ammonia and is not harsh on your skin. I think it can be left to sit for a while in the bore without doing damage, but I never let it sit more than 15 minutes. Letting it sit for that long really gets the copper out.
