Hoppe's #9 smell

What all of you have not mentioned is that with Hoppes #9 is that you get two unique fragerances to choose from. Regular #9 for lead and powder fouling removal and Hoppes Benchrest #9 for copper fouling removal. It has a pretty good amonia smell. Hint: to really get that pesky copper streak out of your barrel, add a cap full of ammonia to your Benchrest #9. Shake bottle vigorously and apply with a patch till barrel is coated thoroughly. Reduce interval time that you patch through and reapply. Repeat until dry patch stays white, no blue or gray. That stuff is potent, don't leave it overnight.
At least I didn't see it in any responses mentioning the two.
Usually most folks that don't like it's performance used the wrong one for a intended purpose. And/or they were in too big a hurry. After all, quality time with your firearms includes cleaning. Kinda like having to change dirty diapers on your kids it's part of the experience. Lol!
Love that smell......uhmmmm.....the Hoppes #9 that is.
Happy shooting !

DAMMIT!

Diapers and cat-litter!

You've nailed it for any of us unable to put our finger directly on it. The No 9 smell.... NOT the cat litter.

Todd.

I love the smell of Hoppes #9. It is associated with guns for me from childhood, like the smell of fresh-burnt powder.

It is like a holy anointing oil for guns and gun devotees, including myself.

I have mostly moved over to Ballistol though due to its advertised lower toxicity, and while the smell doesn't seem particularly offensive to me it isn't particularly likable either. But like some other folks I have noticed an involuntary cough or retch reaction that I can't explain. I've learned not to spray ballistol without turning my head, that's for sure.

I suspect that Hoppes is better for copper removal than Ballistol. And certainly Ballistol is more of a lubricant.

Yup, it was always a scent associated with the beginning and end of a hunting season for me.
Then, after joining the Army it was linked to Sniper rifles and pleasantly cleaning race-horse rifles with Team mates.

All good, all 'round!

Ballistol? that smells like work and accommodation to me.

This is all I use now. Hoppes is toxic, this is not, and zero smell. It also seems to work as well or better:

Hoppes is a solvent you shouldn't be drinking it. Just being honest I wouldn't consume the k1 either. Maybe k2 if you wind up homeless and on the streets! On second thought don't do that either we have enough guys Cleaning guns underneath bridges in Austin using k2. They get weird, real weird.

Didn't say I drank it, the fumes are not good for you. Crusty curmudgeons.

Lol! Well the fumes are the best part! You saving brain cells for doomsday or something? Psssshhhh....

I'll be AK, cause I rarely clean guns anyways. Oil and wipe down once a year. Clean bolt, piston, and bore at 1000 rounds if I'm feeling motivated. Or do like dad did and make the kids do it.

Doggone kill-joy!;)

You think we continue using it for its efficiency or due to thrift?

In all fairness though, it really is a bottle of screw-you-up in several ways if not used carefully.

Last night I cleaned my Ruger SR22 pistol with some Hoppe's #9. I had never used that product, I had a bottle of the liquid from someone having gifted it to me a long time ago, and I was out of my preferred cleaner.

The solvent worked fine, oiled the gun and put it back together. The problem is that the gun now smells strongly like the solvent. I also noticed that the smell would not get off of my hands even after using dish soap, then a degreaseser, then a shower, etc.

Is this normal? it seems like the polymer frame on the ruger absorved the smell more than the metal parts. I know it's not going to harm anything, but man, that smell is strong.

It is an acquired smell, but after having used it for 30+ years, I equate it w/ clean guns, and love it. I even have car fresheners sold by Hoppes w/ the smell empregnated into them.

The other day I told my wife I was going out to the garage to clean one of my guns. I didn't want to smell up the house with the Hopps #9. She said, "You can clean the gun here in the spare room, I don't mind the smell." She has a hard time with any perfumes or after shaves so I guess Hopps #9 is a very natural smell.

I'm such a miserly user of #9 and Shooter's Choice that I only very recently came to know that #9 comes in some crappy, BS plastic bottle now.

When did that start?

Todd.

I'm definitely one of the heretics. Didn't like it when I was 12 and got my first gun, still don't care for it at 55. Have one small bottle around here, though. The stuff occasionally comes in handy.
Ballistol: Yep, like vomit, IMO. Or maybe dirty feet and vomit. But I use it for certain things.
Kroil: Yep, dig it.
G96: Dig it, too.
