On a scale of 1-9, with 1 being worst smell ever, 9 being best smell ever, and 5 being totally neutral, Hoppes is a 4.

The only thing I dislike about cleaning my guns is the fact that I don't own a house yet, and therefore end up cleaning my guns in the kitchen and get to hear my wife complain about the smell, after which she starts burning her scented candles which really irritate my sinuses.

All told, gun cleaning is an overall unpleasant experience for me, and I end up avoiding it whenever possible - but not because I don't want to clean my guns.

Wow, I made a popular post. Had no idea. I thought I was weird. Love the air freshener by the way.

Want to really start a debate? How do you pronounce Hoppe's?

    Hops

Hop-eez is what the old men call it and it sounds funny....

Grammatically, it is pronounced "Hops" unless it is named after somebody's name, which can be pronounced all sorts of odd ways.

No funnier than "Hops" sounds to me. ;)

    jeepnik asked:
and I told him how I have always pronounced it.

I probably learned that pronunciation from an old guy (50 or more years ago) ... and now I are one, so ... :)

Part of the Pronunciation Debate Thing involves whether or not you actually care how someone else pronounces the word.

... like someone telling me that GuhRAND is incorrect. <chuckle>

I can't say that I do. Somewhat bizarrely, I find Ballistol a pleasant liquorish-y scent.

I can't stand the smell of Hoppes 9. So much so I don't even use the stuff. If I want to smell my gun cleaner I either use G96, Rem Oil, or CLP. If I don't want to smell it, I use Hoppes Elite which is borderline odorless.

I'm pretty sure it was copied by a cologne maker and sold it. I think I was in bass pro shops maybe cableas in Gendale Arizona.

This made me laugh. I say "Hop's" but I'm sure I'm wrong to the "Hop-ezz" folk. Not that it matters at all. I am of the opinion that the cleaning of the guns is part and parcel of the entire shooting experience. I don't find it altogether unpleasant any more than say, policing my brass, packing my cases, loading it unloading my rifles into and out of the car and any of the other stuff that you have to do outside of the fun part of actually shooting.

I get a real sense of completion when I put my rifle or pistol away and it's slick and greased and clean. It's rewarding in its own right

I'm old and I have always heard it called "Hop-eez" since I was six. Probably originated from the really old-timers whose brains were rotted out from the MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) it contained. I use it and like the smell. As far as rotting yer brain...heck who wants to live forever. LOL

Doesn't matter if you want to or not. Nobody lives forever.

    In this life, anyway. ;)

If you're a teen aged kid and you watch a guy or gal
cleaning a gun with Hoppes #9. You are hooked both
    on shooting and on #9.

The hoppes air freshener works good for a day or 2 and loses it's smell. But it does smell good for a day or 2

Uh oh. The bottle I have is probably circa 1980. I like the smell so I'd better save it for special occasions! (Since I started shooting again a few years ago, I mostly use Ballistol or Bore Tech Eliminator for cleaning, and I'm in the clean-only-when-accuracy-degrades school, so everything lasts a long time. Kinda hate the amine smell of Eliminator, btw.)

I noticed recently that Walgreens house-brand tar shampoo smells, at least to me, a little like Hoppe's #9. If you like that, you can treat your dandruff and enjoy the aroma of gun cleaning simultaneously! You also get the fun of soaking your head in something labeled "known to the state of California to cause cancer." Unfortunately, the odor doesn't seem to persist after leaving the bathroom.

I love the smell of #9. Takes me back to my childhood with my dad cleanng guns at the kitchen table, Back then you never let the sun set on a dirty gun. I wish I had one of the old glass bottles instead of the new plastic ones. Now while I love Ballistal, I still can't wrm up to it's smell.

I kinda like the way it smells, but I like breakfree CLP better.
CLP is the one that takes me back to the long long ago when I was a kid.

Although it smells good, it doesn't change the fact that it's solvent vapour and can cause brain damage including neurotoxicity via inhalation and absorption through the skin.

Wear gloves and use it in well ventilated areas!

No brain tumours or neurological problems ppl!!!! Be safe!
