i know its not a lube but i like the way it cleans and smells. im thinking on using it on all guns, all parts, then lube with ballistol. good idea?

I use it pretty liberally on the slide and frame (and cylinder of my wheel guns) but I wipe it off and use something else to actually lubricate.

I just avoid using it on nickel plated guns, which isn't a major hindrance since I don't currently own any.

Good point on nickle finishes. It might not be a good idea if the finish has a copper underlay.

I use Hoppe's for cleaning the bore of my guns (only). I then follow up with a "light machine oil" or "high quality firearms oil" in the bore and throughout the entire mechanism as specified by the manuals that go with the guns. For inacessible areas (i.e. under handguards, etc.) ONLY, I will use a quality motor oil with a good anti-oxidant package since past experience has shown it is less likely to migrate than the light machine oils.

I ignore everything else. All that has been used on my guns since 1979 has been a few of bottles of Hoppe's, five 4 oz. cans of Sears Household Oil, and the scant leftovers from a container of Mobil One.

I have the unique experience of having to leave guns maintained using this protocol largely unattended for the better part of 21 years. They experienced Zero rust, Zero gumming, Zero degradation. When the manufacturers say to use a "light machine oil", my experience suggests they know what they're talking about.

I only use it for actually cleaning barrel bores, and any carbon/crud buildup in and around cylinder gaps in revolvers and in semi auto rifles like ARs for same purpose. I use Tetra gun grease - which can be wiped/buffed dry for interior barrel protection - as a dry lube, and or oil for general lubrication. For exterior rust protection I use Tetra grease wiped/buffed dry for field use, holster etc. Boeshield T-9 for storage.

I use Hoppe's No 9 for cleaning bores, chambers and bolt faces, and parts exposed to powder fouling.
I have read claims that Hoppes No 9 can damage certain stock and metal finishes.
It is a cleaner not a lube or exterior protectant.

I love the smell of it. And I learned today, don't use it on nickel finishes.

I've always heard about not using Hoppe's around nickel plated guns but I don't have any guns that are nickeled so it doesn't concern me. Now if I could just get my wife to dab a little on as a perfume I'd be real happy. Not gonna get my hopes up too much on that one, though.

Hoppe's #9 is great for all of your gun cleaning needs. Then oil. Btw, I just found out that there IS a Hoppes scented air freshener available. How cool is that?

Pretty much use Hoppes No.9 on the barrel and then on the receiver, slide, just about anywhere powder residue, dirt, and accumulated build-up might be on the gun. Then lightly oiled (RemOil), and covered in a silicon cloth and placed in a gun case. Been doing it this way for over 40 years and have nice clean and well preserved guns to show for it.

The smell of Hoppes #9 is due to the amyl acetate, aka banana oil.

It's a great solvent, never intended to be a lubricant or corrosion inhibitor.

The "gun bore cleaner" part of the name is just marketing. Any time you use any kind of solvent you need to re-oil afterwards.

Hoppe's #9 is the only solvent I use to clean my guns. I've tried other gun cleaners, they don't work as well, and they cost more. There's a reason Hoppe's #9 has been cleaning guns for over 100 years, it works. I use 5W-30 as my gun lube after that.

I tried Ballistol, but just can't stand that foul aroma. It actually stinks the gun safe up really bad.

I have used it for over 60 years.
They cut some ingredient but it still works & smells good.
I follow it up with Barricade to prevent rust
