Nitro powder solvent formulas, including Hoppes #9, have changed over the years as smokeless gunpowders and priming compounds have changed. I did read that Hoppes removed a carcinogen from the formula a few years back but I did not make a note of the date. I always made a point of not eating, drinking or smoking while cleaning guns and thoroughly washing hands afterwards so I was not concerned. I have discovered this: guncleaning patches with #9 dropped in the kitchen wastecan repel gnats.

If they ever remove the amyl acetate from the formula their #9 business will dry up.

, contact the MFR about this. They should be able to help you with that ... unless their lawyers have instructed them not to.

that was removed from the original #9 formula is nitrobenzene - 'a known carcinogen'.
But, when you take a sniff of the old #9, as compared to the new, your sense of smell says "Yes! That's the real stuff!" (assuming you grew up with the original formula).
FWIW, Bruno's Shooter's Supply was selling the old formula #9 as recently as a few years ago - I bought a gallon. I don't know whether they were obtaining the Hoppe's directly in the old formula, or simply adding the nitrobenzene.
Gun cleaning, as such, lost its charm for me a few decades ago, but having the old #9 makes it less of a chore.

My understanding, from the smith I use, Hoppe's was urged by the EPA to remove 2 chemicals they used in the Hoppe's formula, chemicals no longer allowed ! The smell is the same, but doesn't clean as it used to. Can be used as a room deodorizer though.
