gonna be putting in an order soon and was comparing BC and weights of bullets...the Hornady 168 hpbt(knockoff of Sierra MatchKings?) have a BC of .450 and the Hornady AMAX have a BC of .475

are the AMAX worth an extra 5 bucks or stick to the hpbt? or just buy the Sierra hpbt with the BC of .462?

168gr A-MAX vs. the 168gr HPBT also from Hornaday ... go with the HPBT.

168gr A-MAX vs the 168gr HPBT from Sierra ... go with the A-MAX.

Nosler 168gr vs just about anything at $190/1000 ... go with the Nosler ... that was my choice recently.

:)

hornady will shoot as good as if not better than anything on the market

Hornady 168 BTHP is what I use. It may not be as slick as some of others but it works for me in my AR10B.

do you mean go with hornady 168 AMAX over sierra 168 hpbt? i looked for a sierra AMAX and did not see any....

Yes, if I had to choose between the Hornady 168gr A-MAX and the SMK 168gr HPBT I'd choose the Hornady. The A-MAX is an excellent bullet (as is the SMK) but the A-MAX bullets are cheaper and have a higher BC. If cost is important to you then I'd suggest the Nosler 168gr since it's also an excellent bullet and cheaper than both the Sierra, the A-MAX and Hornady's HPBT.

As for the comments re the quality and performance of Hornady bullets ... I agree. The 208gr A-MAX bullets that I'm shooting in my .300 Win Mag are outstanding. I ordered 178gr A-MAX bullets for my .308 Win after I shot the 208s. I'm going to save all of my 168gr bullets for the M1A if it ever arrives.

:)

If you want a good high BC 168 grain bullet...look at the Berger 168 grain Match BT (not the VLD).

The 168 grain Nolser Ballistic Tip has the highest BC (.490) of any 168 grain bullet made.

with the higher BC of match bullets i suppose it is being done by using a longer ogive and/or boat tail......how would this play into seating depth? and bearing surface? would it be good to get data specific to loading the individual bullet and not just a weight group like my lee manual puts them into?
1858, i had seen the 178g bullets how well do they shoot? my barrel is 1:12 and am just trying to figure out something for consistent MOA or hopefully less

For your barrel with a 1:12 twist, you can't beat a 168gr or even a 175gr HPBT bullet (or the A-MAX at 168gr) for a good combination of accuracy and BC.

My barrel has a 1:10 twist rate so I decided to go up in weight from 168gr to 178gr but haven't shot any yet. I may even try 190gr and 208gr in the .308 to see how they do. I'm very pleased with the 208gr A-MAX so I expect the same from the 178s.
