Testing the waters out there.... Does anyone have any load data for Hornady 180gr XTP bullets with VihtaVuori 3N37 powder?
 
Google "VihtaVuori" and select Lapua reloading data. If you can't find data specifically for Hornady 180gr XTP use data for another 180gr bullet just don't get sloppy in you load development. Use the start load and work up.

BTW it would help to name the cartridge, probably a .40 S&W but could be a 10mm.
 
Sorry, I've been trying to find this exact data and rushed the question. Yes, it's .40S&W. I have tried the Lapua site. Steve C, that was kind of what I was looking for because I can't find anything for a 180gr XTP, and the 3N37, but I do find some other 180gr bullets. The problem is the range that I'm finding in some of my manuals and on line. For instance the Speer manual gives a range from 6.6-7.2gr, so I charged some cases at 6.9. I was setting up my new Lee dies when I noticed they had some data on the back of the sheet and it said to never exceed 6.6gr for this same load. I think I've seen jacketed bullet data from 5.4gr up to 7.2gr. I ended up dumping those first loads out because I didn't want to be too hot. Thanks for the help.
 
Ignore the Lee die sheet.

It is purposely low because they think you might use the little powder scoop they gave you to 'weigh' your charges!

They list Speer, not Hornady so work up always. I think XTP's are harder.
 
I just wanted to say thanks for all of the information. I posted this same thing on another site and I didn't get any information at all.

If you are going to routinely use Hornady bullets, you need your own Hornady manual, now 9th edition. I expect taking pictures of its pages and posting here is actually a copyright violation. If Hornady was going to distribute them freely, the bullet data charts would be on their website. ICBW.

That bullet general description, simply "180 XTP", is indicated for 357 Remington Maximum, 357 Magnum, 38-40 Winchester, 44 Special, and 44 Magnum, so you better be durned sure which caliber you want. In semiautos, I see it in 10mm, 40 S&W , et al. You simply need to specify caliber.

p.s I looked twice but missed that you indicated 40 S&W.

I have the Hornady manual. I just can't find the XTP bullet with the 3N37 data. I was told that I could substitute any .40S&W, 180gr. jacketed hollow point in place of the XTP bullet, use the powder data instead of the bullet data
 
Use VV data and work up. Start low and set COAL for function in your pistol. I wouldn't go shorter than the VV COAL of 1.126" if you intend to go stout with these. 3N37 should be a good powder for this caliber and bullet weight. Notice how there is data for a 170gr Hronady HP and a 180 Speer GD. Use this as your starting point.

I have been using other jacketed data for many years, especially before the internet was around, and all you had to go on was the books at hand. As long as you use a starting charge for a bullet of similar design, JHP, FMJ, or what ever it is classified as, you should be fine. But other wise, use manufacturer specific data when it's available, and then work up the powder charge after you've settled on the oal you'll be using.

GS, Thank you. I didn't word it that way but that's what I really wanted to know. Do I "have" to have load data for an XTP bullet or will JHP data work?
Mas Chemist, That's what I did. I used VV data last night and loaded my first rounds of .40.

I'm very new to all of this, so thanks to everyone again for the help!!

BTW, you will likely find that VV3n37 performs better if loaded on the "hot" side. Don't try to make powder puff rounds with this particular powder, it is not suited to that task.
