Hornady 3 die set coated 45 acp crimp-Solved

Hi Guys,

I am having trouble crimping with the seating/crimp die in this Hornady set. I am belling the case mouths so the bullet just sits on the top of the case.... .475 outer mouth of case dia. After reading the instructions to seat and crimp the bullets (185 TMJ-SWC) I am not returning the case mouth to its original dia .470. I am a little perplexed. Any ideas? Belling the case to much?

I am leaning towards a factory crimp die from Lee to solve my problems.

Thanks for helping a rookie:)

I would not seat and crimp with the same die I suggest you seat the bullet then crimp seperately All the die companies make a taper crimp die so it's a matter of preference as to whose.
I set my crimp die by taking a sized case raising it up to the die
turn the die down till it touches the case lower the case then turn the die down 1/8 turn and lock in place

I believe that you do not have your seating/crimping die adjusted correctly. If you want to seat and crimp in one operation, set your die this way. Screw your seating die out far enough so that crimper part(look inside the die to see crimper ring) is NOT touching your case mouth and seat your bullet to its crimping groove with your die's seating screw. Then back out your seating screw and screw your die body down to you feel it touching the case mouth. You are now ready to crimp. Turn your die body down no more than 1/4 turn at a time until you get your desired crimp. When you do, turn your lock ring down and lock it in place. Finally turn your seater stem down until it's touching the bullet. Lock your seater nut down and you will have a perfect seated and crimped round. BTW, all adjustments are to be made with your press's ram at it's highest point. Good shooting!
