I want to buy some new 30-30 brass. I was in a store today and the only 30-30 brass they had was Hornady. Is is the regular length? It seems that I read that there is some Hornady brass that is shorter than normal. but maybe I dreamed that.

Hornady's component brass is the proper length.
The only brass that is a bit short is the stuff they use to load the ftx bullets in the 45-70

All calibers of brass they load the FTX in is shorter then normal.

That includes all rifle & handgun calibers as far as I know.

All of the brass loaded with the FTX bullets is shorter. Don't really know why, but it is. Just brass for reloading from Hornady is standard length.

Thanks, so I am safe buying unloaded brass. Good to know.
Yes it's "safe" to buy and it's good brass if you can get past the high price. IMO you can get much better deals online. Online Winchester 30-30 brass is ~$17/50 and Hornady 30-30 brass is ~$35/50.

Even if it were once fired FTX brass, and maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think it would make much difference for a 30-30 application anyway.

I'm glad I clicked on this thread. I was loading some 357's the other day and noted that some of my cases were about 1/16" shorter than the others. And they were all shiny once fired range pickup nickel hornady cases. I was going to post and ask about them at some point.

Does anybody know why it is shorter?

I don't like the nickel brass. It can scratch your dies and sometimes grabs the expander die as you bell the case.

Yes.
Because the FTX plastic tip Spitzer bullet is longer then normal FP or HP bullets the same weight.

The cases are shorter to make the loaded rounds OAL short enough to fit in revolver cylinders and feed in lever-actions.

There is your answer in a nutshell...

I bought some Hornady 30-30 hoping it was shorter to make .219 Zippers. It is regular length brass.

It would be unless you buy the LeverRevolution loads with the rubber tip Spitzer bullets.

I was under that impression also, but I found that the .35 Rem is not shorter than SAAMI spec...

Only one I have been exposed to, so the only one I can attest to...
I have shot Hornady LVR ammo in 30-30, 45-70 and .357 Magnum and all the cases were slightly shorter than standard brass for those cartridges to accommodate the longer tipped bullets. If the 35 Rem brass isn't shorter it might be because many of the bullets used in the 35 Rem are on the long side past the cannelure so no shortening of the brass was necessary to load the FTX bullet.

Greyling22, I just came across a bunch of nickel Hornady .357 brass a little while ago in my stash, so I trimmed them down to 38 spcl., which is how I regularly deal with this issue.

With other cartridges though, it depends on what, or if, they can be used for some other application.

Same goes for XTP Hornady ammo, at least for 357. I've got a bagfull of it . It's a pain if it gets mixed in with full length brass, end up with no crimp.
