Hornady's 300 Whisper ammo is hitting retailers shelves and availability is becoming more common now. The ammo has been eagerly awaited by many who own either one of JD Jones' excellent rifles or any of the 308/221 wildcats. The UPS driver brought me three boxes of the 208gr A-Max ammo this more, I ordered this from Midwest Hunters Outlet on Friday. This is the subsonic offering made for use in suppressed rifles. The lighter super sonic 110gr V-Max loading is also available.
At $22.00 dollars a box it will not stop me from reloading this cartridge but it does offer an alternative to other more expensive factory offerings of this round. Depending on range results I may switch from the Match Kings I have long reloaded with to the A-Max bullet. I have used A-Max bullets in other calibers and have always been impressed with the accuracy I have obtained from them. I am also curious how the bullet will perform when loaded to subsonic velocities for my Ruger 77 in .308 with the Ceiner can on it.
With the heat index hovering around 110 today and predictions of it being even higher for the rest of the week range testing will wait till next Monday or Tuesday when the heat is suppose to break.
Here it is next to one of my reloads...
I am really looking forward to sending some of this ammo downrange and seeing how it performs out of my Whisper...
Just as a sidenote...According to AAC this ammo should function in the Blackout AR upper which uses a copy of the same basic cartridge. Not to disparage Remington ammo but I suspect the A-Max bullet will have a definite edge in accuracy over the Remington ammo at a comparable price.
