Hornady LNL AP loose insert

I hope I didn't break the press. I was trying to loosen a die and ended up loosening one of the inserts where the bushings go. It's threaded and I screwed it back in, but it doesn't take much force to unscrew it. Anyone ever had this happen? Thinking about lock-titing it back in place.

I'm still a fairly new user of the LNL AP and haven't had that problem yet. I don't see how using Locktite would hurt.

Never ever had that happen. You can put some blue Lok-tite on the threads so they won't loosen easily or you can use a permanent (purple?) Lok-tite.
Or, you can complain to Hornady and maybe they'll send you some Lok-tite.

Never had that problem either. Don't see how the blue locktite could hurt. Might still want to call Hornady. Worth the call just to listen to the answering machine.

I don't know what the factory uses but I'm sure they have a tool thay allows them to put a fair amount of torque on the bushing when installing them. I see no reason why loctite wouldn't work. You might call Hornady and see if they have a better solution.

I had that problem after having my press for about a month (about a year ago). I just locked a die into a bushing, put that in the insert, applied blue Loc-tite, and torqued the die lock-ring down. I let it sit overnight before breaking the die and bushing loose from the insert. Haven't had an issue since. It wouldn't hurt to call Hornady and see what they say.

You can use a bushing and die from the bottom to get some torque on it to tighten it up. But before you do that, remove it all the way and inspect the insert. I don't think loctite is required if the bushing is torqued like it should be. You may be using to much torque when you snug the bushing it. It does not take much to hold a die in place.

Yea, about two fingers tight is all you need. Sounds like he tried to tighten the die in the insert ....no need to.

I had an insert come loose on mine when I first got it, and got a little carried away. A dab of red loctite, and it's been fine for 4 years.

If you have tow different metals like aluminum and steel, lok-tite could be very bad. They will seize together over time without any help if not lubed. I am not sure what the bushing is made of , but if its aluminum and your press is cast steel, you are asking for problems.

I believe the LNL AP is made out of aluminum. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I think I have some bushings that fit too tight. When I tightened down the lock nut on the die, it also moved the bushing to the full locked position, which required more force to unlock it. The lugs on the press aren't machined into it - they are a separate piece that threads into the press. Hornady is sending me some new bushings and want the others back - they think the outside diameter is too big. I'll give the locktite a try.
