Hornady Superformance

my ruger use to hate them but after some mods it will put the in a 1 inch group, IMHO give the 130 gmx's in superformance, they make nice groups out of my m77 ruger, <.592> best so far at 100

We use a lot of the Hornady Superformance, and did use a lot of the 'Light Magnum' ammo from them, and I can say that, some rifles love it....and some rifles don't!

Just today I was tasked with setting up, yet another rifle, of excellent quality both the rifle and its $1200 scope....the customer specified load X to be used, which was Hornadys SF.

Long story short....this particular rifle absolutely did not like the SF loads, (I tried two different bullet weights) at all, shooting both weight bullets into 2" on our 100m range!

Could it be the scope....? Heavens no batman, no way, but alas, the decision was made to mount a different optic...this provided the same performance, so the high dollar optic went back on the rifle.

Has to be the rifle right....well, it could be, so in pure inquisitive fashion I plucked both Federal Fusion and Remington Green/yellow box Core-loct ammo from the shelf and continued the session.

The Federal would print 3/4" give or take, while the ol' stand-by Remington Core-loct would drill one bullet over the other, these being 5 shot groups, so, it was not the rifle.

On the other hand, there have been many rifles mimic the Core-Loct performance of this rifle with Hornady Light Magnum ammo.... it seems the new 'Superformance' ammo tends to be far more finicky than the older Light Magnum stuff.

Only way to tell IF your rifle will enjoy a few more FPS and pounds of energy from the SF ammo, is to try it in your particular rifle.

The Hornady SF ammo is made with the excellent SST bullet, among others.

The only way to know for sure is to try it. Not all gun are equal even off the same production line. I don't have a 270 ,mine is a 7mm rem mag and i have a bunch of the older Hornady HM ammo that my rifle just loves. This was one cartriage That hornady had a time with and it either worked or didn't work in rifles.. That is one reason that hornady devoloped the super line . Better and faster overall. Buy still may not like your combo. A hunting friend has shot the new hornady super's in a win model 70,a browning A bolt and his old vanguard with great results. All 270's . Got the first 2 rifles in a trade. go figure..

I am about to try some Hornady's next week. 140gr SST's in my 270. Funny what you say about Federal and Remingtom ... I had the same exterience ... after trying out groupings in three of some barnes MRX and TSX hand loads ... went through 90 rounds of differing gr ... the Federal factory loads (which) I was only using to tune the scope in were shooting bullet onto bullet. As you can imagine how pissed off I was after so many hand loads of goupings that didn't make it within 3 inches at 100 yards, these factory Federals hiting the same mark every shot.

I just bought a box of 150 gr 308's rated at 3000 fps and a box of 165 gr 30-06's rated at 2900 fps. Both were tested with 24" barrels. My 22" 308 and 30-06 velocities were pretty close to the advertised velocities considering the 2" shorter barrel. I averaged 2962fps in the 308 and 2857 fps in my 30-06. That is about 70 fps faster than my handloads in 30-06 and 150 fps faster than I am getting in the 308.

Accuracy in my rifles was not quite as good as my handloads, but was around 1 1/4" for 3 shots at 100 yards. Good enough for almost all hunting situations.

Priced at about $26 in 308 and $28 in 30-06 for the SST bullets they are not too bad for a premium load with some costing near $50/box now. The solid copper GMX bullets are more expensive, but still reasonable for the non lead bullets.

I only shot 1 group of 3 shots plus 3 rounds of each through the chronograph so it is too early draw any firm conclusions, but they look promising if you need a little more velocity from your rifle.
