i trying to find some info for the .45 185g xtp bullets. the only info i can find is for accurate #2 the only store that sells that is hour and half away i dont really want to drive that far today. i have hs-6 and hp38 for handgun powder. for hodgdon the only thing they got is for JSWC

From Lyman's 49th:

185 XTP
HP-38
Suggested Start 3.5 (599fps)........ 5.8 MAX (960fps)

This data is specifically with 185 XTP, and it is marked as their accuracy load with that bullet. No loads with HS-6 in Lyman 49th with that bullet though.

Edit to add: If you want more velocity, it looks like Winchester WSF powder got the highest with 8.0 grains MAX and ~1050 fps.

Both HS-6 and HP-38/W231 will work well in the .45 Auto. With HS-6 you will need to stay up near the upper end of the pressure curve because it works better at higher pressures. HP-38 will be a more versatile powder in the .45 Auto and that's where I would start.

If you're looking for top end .45 ACP ammo go with HS-6 and for everything else in the .45 ACP use HP-38. I've not loaded 185gr bullets before but I have used 200gr and 230gr bullets. I'm sure those powders will work as well with a 185gr bullet as they do with 200-230gr bullets.

Hey buck I made up 10 rounds of your recipe. Angel I will do some research and try that hs 6. I going to take a guess your name u play paintball right I had a eclipse jr when they first came out

You might also look at WSF. I use 7.6 to 7.7 grains under a hornady 185 grain HP/XTP. FPS runs around 850 +/-25fps. from a 3" barrel of a Kimber UCC II.

Hornady's 8th edition 45ACP data for 185 XTP's lists a start with HP-38 at 6.5 grains and a maximum of 6.9 grains for 900 fps. For HS-6 they list a start charge of 8.7 at 850fps to a maximum of 10.1 grains for 1000 fps. They used Hornady cases and Win LP primers in a 5" Colt Gov't. Hornady lists an overall length with the 185 XTP at 1.225".
