I just read on a trucking forum that hornet spray will work like pepper spray.
Is this true?
Canada wont even allow truck drivers to carry pepper spray for defense much less a gun. If Canadian customs finds pepper spray on a driver, they can seize the truck. I dont think anyone would question a can of raid.:D

Well, it's bound to be an irritant, but I doubt that it's as harmless as pepper spray (which might increase the chances of liability) or that it's as good an irritant as pepper spray.

I cant say for sure about the legality of using Raid, but in todays climate you could be charged with a act of terrorism for using a airborne chemical weapon  . But I agree with the first poster civil liability could be a real nightmare for you if the guy is left blinded for life. Welcome to the sad world we live in, a world where we must worry about the consequence of defending ourselves just as much as the means.

Fire extinguisher'd be better. More useful in the truck, and easier to explain.

Don't know if it's more harmful than hornet-spray, but a dry chemical extinguisher is much worse than pepper-spray. Although a CO2 extinguisher leaves much less mess if you have to fight a fire.

I believe it says on the can it's a "federal violation to use this product in any way other than it's intended purpose".

A can of Brake Cleaner blends with ANY vehicle. One drop of this in the eyes and you are out of the fight. Costs $1.89 per can.:)

Flick your bic with any aerosol spray. BG easy to identify since they have no eyebrows or eyelashes. If I have to defend myself, I'll worry about the legalities later. Otherwise there may not be a "later".

Thanks guys, wasn't thinking about the liability. It gave me a good laugh so I thought I would pass it on.:D

It is probably highly effective as it contains toxins that kill hornets on contact. As for use of humans, it is against the law. All products are marked with their "acceptible" use. For instance if you used it on a burglar and they went blind...they could sue you and might win, you'd become the bad guy! Worse yet if you killed them, the family could press charges or at least sue you for millions, changing your life forever. If your in a pinch and its all you've got in a deadly situation, definately use it, but short of that, I'd find something different to plan on carrying.

Binaca (mouth spray) in the eyes would be just as effective for temporarily blinding (and much less lethal). I'm not suggesting using it, but at least its intended use is on humans, and its not illegal to carry in the US or Canada!

"...More useful in the truck, and easier to explain..." And required by our laws. However, if you use safety equipment for anything but an emergency, you're in deep doo-doo. Hair spray or spray deodorant, on the other hand, is just hair spray or deodorant. No lighter required. A spray in the face and it's just like mace. That mallet/fish billy/hardwood stick you use to check your tires doesn't have to live outside the cab either.
Bear spray is legal and available here, but you can't bring it with you. Bug spray is toxic. Forget the bug spray.

If I were a Canadian trucker I would get a couple of handy quality mechanical spray bottles; fill with a solution of household ammonia and water. Put a big sticky label on the bottle - or just write with a usable marker - "WINDOW CLEANER". Adjust the nozzle to "stream", and use for cleaning glass etc. A bonus is that anyone intent on doing you harm who get's even a modest facial with your window cleaner - will likely leave you alone for a good while as other priorities suddenly enter their mind.

A Class A,B,C fire extinguisher will perhaps do the same in many or most cases. But it could be messy too in some circumstances, and it won't clean your glass.

You can buy deer fly and black fly pheromones. You can also get hornet and bee alarm pheromones. It's not immediate self defense, but just think of the possibilities for a moment or two
