I've been hunting with an AR for over 30 years.

Contrary to popular anti-gun mythology I don't use a 20 or 30 round magazine so I can turn animals into hamburger. Why is that? One very practical reason is because lead and brass are pretty darn heavy and humping a bunch of useless weight through the woods all day is just stupid. Anybody who hunts with an "assault rifle" knows this.

I didn't choose the AR as a hunting rifle because I can fit it with 20 or 30 round magazines. The reasons are much more practical and down to earth: it's ergonomic, easy to shoot accurately, easy to personalize it to fit me, etc.

I'm one of those "nut cases" who hunts with a 5 round magazine that's loaded with a whopping 3 rounds. Scary, aren't I?

I also have killed a few deer with one for the same reasons.

Count me as one that hunts with a mini-30. Use the five-rounder for deer and such, use a 20-rounder for whistle pigs and rabbits.

More than a few people, myself included, use military style sporting rifles to hunt game animals.
They are no more nor any less effective for the humane taking of game animals.
It isn't a crime, it should not be viewed with disdain, nor judged as "Unsportsmanlike".
Remember, those "Fudd" bolt action rifles began use as Military rifle designs too.

Add me in! Only a 30rd mag is great for a dog town! And 20rd for a one mag day of 'yote hunting. For deer? Any works.

Oh and my other prime choice? A WWII Mauser in .257! I guess I am just evil.

I killed my only two deer this year (so far) with a 6.8 spc AR. Now that I want to give my new 30-06 a try, I can't find a deer to save my life.... The AR must be a truly superior hunting weapon.

I've taken my Arsenal SGL 31 (AK-74) on many hog hunts over the years. And although I have 10 rounders for it I prefer to hunt with the 30s for two reasons: 1. I usually grip the mag with my forward hand as opposed to the foregrip. 2. Every once in a while you come across a whole mess of pigs, and the extra rounds are welcome.

i hunt with my stag model 2 every year. i carry a colt 20 round mag with 6 rounds in it. i just prefer the bigger 20 round mags for handling and changing. a 69 smk will do some massive damage if placed well.

I've taken more game with an AR than any other rifle I own. My son shot his first elk with an AR-10 opening morning of his first hunt when he was 12. The AR is the perfect hunting platform. Can be adapted to many calibers, easily adjusted to fit individual shooters, light weight and extremely accurate.

People need to be educated that ANY hunting rifle is based on a military rifle. The standard bolt action rifle most people think of being used for hunting is based on the Mauser platform that was used in WWI and WWII and took more American lives than any "Assault Rifle" has.
