Presuming both your house gun & carry guns are handguns, is your house gun the same as your carry gun?
For example, you carry a Beretta 92fs and it also meets the requirements you have set up for house use. Are your carry requirement in a gun that much different than your house gun requirements?

Me first

My house gun and carry gun are not the same. Due to where I work, I can't carry. So, I only getto carry about 10% of the time, and so I have never really had a chance to get comfortable carrying. So, for that reason, I can't carry a 'full size' gun, ie 5" 1911, H&K USP, Beretta 92. I always feel like I am printing, even if I'm not, and so I feel conspicuos.

I am better off carrying a Firestorm .380...

But, for house gun, I see no reason not to have a full-size sidearm type of handgun, whether it's a GP-100, or a 1911.

The only problem I can see is training. If someone is unfamiliar with pistols, then they could get themselves in trouble if they have two different setups...

I am a believer in Clint Smith's mantra that a handgun is a weapon of convenience until you can get (fight?) your way back to your long gun of choice (I am paraphrasing here, so correct me if I'm wrong). I carry a handgun because it is a compromise between range, power, concealability, convenience, etc., ad nauseum, blah blah.... but for home defense my PRIMARY weapon is my Win. 1300 shotgun.

However, using your presumption that carry and HD guns are both handguns, yes my primary carry gun is also used as a HD gun, but it is a backup to my primary HD gun, my shotgun. And my wife is my backup, on the phone with 911 with her handgun at the ready.

My carry gun, a P99, is usually on me at home until I go to bed, then it is within reach until I wake up. The pistol I leave at home for my GF is usually a Sig 225. So, they are different pistols, but the same class i.e. Trad DA. I shoot both regularly, so I am not worried about the differences with decocking. I can take all the time I want to decock the pistol after the fact.

My carry gun is a .380 Russian Makarov...only because it is light and easy to carry.

The house gun is a Rem 870 pump action 12 gauge loaded up with 000 buck. It wears an 18 inch barrel for social situations. In 30 seconds, I can put on the long barrel for dove or duck season.

I say go with a shotgun for in the house. The loud CLACK-CLACK of cycling a round into the chamber is itself a weapon. If intruders don't run after hearing that sound, they will probably need to be shot anyway.

Also with a shotgun, at inside-the-house distances, a load of #7 cheapo birdshot is just as effective as anything else. Plus, there's no worry of over penetration and hitting the neighbors through a couple of walls with birdshot.

I keep the 000 buck in mine because I live way out in the boonies, and might even have to use it up to 30 yards away outside......we've got lots of coyotes, bears, bobcats, meth makers, all kinds of critters that I might have to go deal with in the dark in the yard.

Ditto what hillbilly said.

Though I load my 870 with 2- #6 birdshot, capped with 2 - 00 buck. Just in case the li'l pellets don't work... :D

I do not have designated guns. I may carry what I choose to have nearby at night, or not.

I imagine that eventually as I aquire more and more in the way of firearms that I will allocate specific firearms for specific duties. But not for now...

They are all 1911 45acp's, although they may not be the same size.

I might carry a Kimber Ultra Carry or Springfield Champion and leave the Para Ordnance fullsize double stack at home.

kel-tec .32 Seems to go everywhere except the shower.

Keep a Kimber 1911, Ruger GP-100, S&W 6906 around to carry when out and about.

My home gun is a Rem. 870 loaded with 2 3/4 BB's and #1 Buck after that.

I have several "house guns."

Typically, I keep a .45 Colt handy downstairs -- a run-in with a bear and another with a dog convinced me that I need something like that (I live more than a quarter mile from the nearest neighbor, and 911 response time is measured in days.) I also keep a rifle, usually a .22 Hornet in the downstairs bedroom, ready for action -- coyotes, crows, etc. At different times of the year, I may substitute a .30-06.

Upstairs, my carry gun, a Kimber Classic Custom in .45 ACP (naturally) is in my office when not on my person. I also usually keep a .22 revolver there, just to have it handy when going hiking or riding.

The upstairs bedroom is the master bedroom, and I keep a Colt 357 there (the only handgun I actually shot anyone with) in the nightstand, and an Ithaca Model 37 12-ga pump in the closet.

My carry varies depending on my atire.. Winter months find me with a Springfield 1911, or a XD in .40S&W. Summer months usually (if im dressed in shorts etc) find me with a S&W 638 and a Galco pocket holster.

In the house. Its the Benelli M1 Super 90 or a 1911 with night sights... kinda depends on what ends up by the bed and what ends up in the safe...and a surefire of course.

I think one good method is to have a compact and full-size version of the same sidearm. I used to have a Glock 23 (compact) and 24 (target) version, for instance. Basic feel is then close, and manual of arms is identical.
