Well I got up this morning and there was nothing on the radar - by 10pm we have a full blow tropical storm bearing down on the Tx coast with Gaveston- Houston likkely taking a direct hit. A SHTF story in the making!

Gassed up, grabbed the usual hurricane rations of tinned beef/ravioli/water chees/tuna (stuff ya don't need power for) and got some cash.

Gun wise I'm okay - 1000+ rds for the AK with my G19/Sp 101 having some defensive loads, lots of .22LR, but will stock up a bit on some 9mm/.38spl.
Amazing how focused you get - all the fancy Internet discussions go out the window and you zero in on one thing and one thing only: "Which guns will go bang when I need them to." "Which guns will save my skin if it comes down to it." In the next 24-48 hrs police response time likley won't be the best.

Oh yeah - I seriously don't want to think about what gas prices will do if Houston takes a hit worse than Tropical Storm / Cat 1 status. I gassed up at $ 3.71/gal this evening.

darn i'm traveling from austin to houston today! and i just filled up for 3.82 :cuss:

on a more relevant note, i guess i'll bring an extra mag for my carry piece, haha.

Just be glad you arent in DC it's still $4.19 at the Shell station. Good picks for SHTF weapons but I would take it down to 3. A .22, the AK and your Glock 19. Anything more is overkill, plus weight becomes a factor if you have to BUG.

Hang in there.

The good news is that this forming so fast and close to land is that it is unlikely to gain any real strength. Your most likely looking at a Cat.1 at the top. More likely is that it will come ashore as a Tropical Storm, or quickly reduce wind speed to that level when it makes contact with the shore.

That doesn't put you into a real SHTF situation and means that bugging out isn't a realistic possiblity.

Societal breakdown as in Katrina isn't in the works either.

But you may well lose power or even water for a day or so.

I mean don't get me wrong. No tropical storm particularly pleasant, but this will be OK likely.

I have to make a plug for a STHF site someone pointed me to the other day. Lessons learned, written by a guy who evac'd a day ahead of Katrina. Good stuff, it's not surviving zombie attacks (having a gun is mentioned in passing as something you should have, but that's about it) and it's not "survivalism" either. ("Survivalism" being where you head out to your bugout location with your truck full of food and guns, and start over in an idyllic location somewhere where you can reinvent civilization with no one from outside bothering you.

Mostly it's one of the best presentations I've seen about what your "STHF" efforts should be trying to accomplish, namely preserving your life and as much of your 'wealth' as possible. This doesn't mean converting all your stuff to gold, it means if your house got leveled while you were gone, would you have all your licenses, documents, transcripts, insurance photos and docs, etc to be able to start over where you evacuated to? A laptop, external hard drive, and scanner are what you need and the laptop will be your communications and command center as you try to get your life back on track.

I knew a lot of what this guy said but didn't KNOW it until I read it. And since this is looking to be a strong tropical storm or maybe a Cat I hurricane, hopefully you're just looking at a temporary disruption in your life and no more. I suggest filing this info away for some other time though.

I still am pretty much convinced that shooting a hurricane is not going to do me much good, and I really don't think you plan to walk into the nearest piece of forest and live off the land, so I think the .22 is really not necessary. You want to get your kit down to whatever is handy to cart around so if you do end up walking, you can actually carry it.

I think one handgun for SD is probably adequate.

A rifle and a .22 in your car, maybe. But, for carting around, they will get real heavy, real fast.

Get everything packed and back the cars in JUST IN CASE, tomorrow you have to bug out... I am going to be getting up at 4:00 am get a fix on the storm and make sure every thing else has been arranged.

OHMYGODWE'REALLGOINGTODIE!!!!

Quick, everybody get on the Katy freeway at the same time!

Yes! Rain, rain rain! SHTF!! I need to call my sister and get her into the traffic jam immediately. Armed, of course.

Come to New Orleans, you'll be safe here...

Yes, we laugh at Tropical Storms... bwaahaahaa :neener:

Is this a joke? I just looked at the radar and I see nothing....

Cheapest gas around here is $3.60-$3.65.

Checked weather channel; okay. Tropical Storm heading westward from south of the Lousiana delta area. Supposed to make landfall tomorrow morning early.

if it stays a Tropical Storm, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I remember down here in South Florida, at one point when I was younger, tropical storms weren't even considered enough to cancel school.

You might lose power if the power lines are older, and you will probably get plenty of rain, but unless it turns into a hurricane cat 2 or above, I'd think of it as more of a PITA than SHTF. Granted, we just had a really nasty cat 1 hurricane in the last few years down here, but that was a fluke as far as I'm concerned.

Currently sustained maximum winds of 50 mph gust to 65 mph. Expected to hit land at 6:00 to 7:00 hrs Tues. 70 mph sustained winds expected on impact with the coastline. You should throw a hurricane party since most likely you will just get some rain out of it. Texas needs the rain bad so I say bring it on.

Hopefully it will not gain much strength today and it will be a rain maker. We could use some of that in my area!

Situtions develop and it is good to have some emergency planning done and basic supplies in place. I keep large rubbermaid tubs in my garage for packing necessary things out of the house QUICK if it is necessary. I keep a list of necessary things to assemble. Some basic items are already stored in the tubs. The tubs protect from the elements.

Amateurs. JK. Good luck. From what I understand, you will get some much needed rain and little more. We do appreciate our Texas friends taking this one and the previous one this year instead of Louisiana. After going through Katrina, August and September are not exactly my favorite months. A good site for tracking these systems is weather underground. And please get contraflow down right if evacuation becomes a need!

I'm hoping for no damage, no flooding and an inch of rain out in Austin. My yard looks like I have been harvesting hay...

Stay safe!

if your not from around here just be aware, only the coast is in real danger from the huricane itself, inland the possibility of tornado's spun off can be bad. mostly flooding is the big problem, Houston can flood in the middle of a drought and has in the past.....
