How about airsoft for HD when you can't get a gun.

There was a juvie crime problem a while back with kids shooting glass marbles out of paintball guns...

That's actually a pretty cool idea. I wonder how well this would work in the avg paint pellet gun...

Manedwolf, can you post a link for the pepper balls?

i bought one of these a while ago: http://www.eaacorp.com/airguns-drozd-description.html

they're great fun and i'm pretty sure a couple bursts to the face would give someone a very bad day. not so much that i'm willing to give up the ar for hd. i thought a thick bath towel hanging in front of the garage door would be enough backstop, well kinda. slowed the bb's down quite a bit so that after they bounced off the garage door they just kinda patted my legs. the darn thing spits those things out fast and hard. if i ever have to travel through the oppressed portions of our great nation, i might just bring it with me.

Well, crap. Looks like they're no longer in business. I'm pretty sure it was 'www.security-for-all.com', which I had bookmarked, as they had (briefly), the Neutralizer pistol launcher for them, too, which was basically just a decent-quality paintball pistol at twice the price.

Oh well. At least I've got three packs in reserve. Each 10 rounds came in a paintball tube in its own typical "must use chainsaw to open" retail blister pack with shiney marketing imagery, so they were definitely, if apparently briefly, meant for the consumer market.

But this might explain why. Apparently, when they want the law-abiding population to be defenseless, they mean REALLY defenseless:

"Cincinnati police officers - who described The Neutralizer as looking similar to a 9mm semiautomatic pistol with a scope on top - said arming the public with anything that looks like a real gun can be dangerous."

:banghead:

Addon, here's a German site that has them (?), but OUCH at their price! 36 Euros per 10! I'd only paid $15/10. At least you can see what they look like:

Fox Labs 1 lb pepper spray cannister for around 30 bucks, and a cheap 15" khukuri knife or bolo for another 30 bucks.

After seeing so many articles mentioning that "police used pepper spray on the suspect, but it did not seem to have effect, so they had to use their weapons", I don't trust the stuff.

I don't think a strung-out crackhead would even notice it, and how close do they have to be to you for you to use it? If they're running at you with a knife, just the momentum will carry them right into you, pepperspray or not.

The reason why I thought the Pepperballs seemed like a better option is that you can literally be a hundred feet away, and they also suffer a physical impact from it.

yakuza

In Japan it isn't uncommon for Yakuza to modfify airsofts to fire more effective rounds (lead pellets, etc) out of souped-up airsofts...

I'd rather make a zip gun, personally...

As a very big airsofter, I will say that airsoft replicas are NOT to be used for home defence. Airsoft replicas fire 200-300 fps stock, not enough to do any actual damage. If you cannot afford a decent weapon for home defence, then just pray it doesn't happen. If it does, then get out of your home. The last thing you want to do is point a harmless airsoft gun at a real intruder.

I did Gabe Suarez' Interactive Gunfighting course and those little pellets really stung. Someone had brought a full auto model of some German assault rifle and we had a lot of fun with that. It occurred to me that applying that full auto airsoft to someone's face, especially if they had no glasses, would tend to discourage the attacker just a little. (This if for people who can't get a real gun, not an alternative to a real gun)

This is a joke, right?
I have a 450cal(that's right, no period)weapon that travels well over 100mph. I call it my fist.
Seriously, Airsoft and simunitions are for TRAINING AND TRAINING ONLY!!!!!!
If you really want to use airsoft for self defense, PM me. I'll email my personal info and you can add me as a beneficiary to your will.:D

I just finished reading this entire thread and not once did anyone mention a sock full of pennies. Come on guys, keep it real.:D

Ahh hahaha..

i think that may be the only sound scarier than a pump action being shucked. especially in a dark house in the middle of the night.
thinking of that reminded me of a playstation 2 game called manhunt. There is a guy wearing a dead pig suit, with a chainsaw. You walk around in this attic trying to figure out whats going on, and BAM This huge pig like creature fires up a chain saw and runs after you :what: I almost crapped myself when it happened. I can only imagine what would be going through a BGs head when he hears a chainsaw fire up and hit full throttle right behind him in a second or two :what: Needless to say there would probably be a trail of yellow fluid running out of the house :D

I have a friend who collects medieval and fantasy weapons. He looks like a Norse Viking after a binge or to put it in modern terms the poster child for the Hells Angels. The thought of him running downstairs in his boxers, double bladed battle axe in hand, beard and hair flowing in the wind screaming a battle cry always makes me chuckle as I would suspect that would put more of the fear of God in an intruder then me coming down stairs with a firearm.

"...In Japan following regulations apply:
Legal requirements are set on airsoft model manufacturers to prevent any possibility of a replica weapon being converted into an actual firearm.
Standards include (but are not limited to) use of low-melting point metals and non-ballistic plastics in structural components and incompatability of mechanical components with actual firearm components and mechanisms.
The overall litmus test used by the Japanese National Police Authority is whether the replica weapon can be made to chamber and fire an actual round of ammunition.
These standards have proven successful within Japan, as it has been found that criminal elements discovered that it is significantly easier to purchase an actual illegal weapon in comparison to modifying a comparitively fragile replica into a functional firearm.
Due to this reality, most crimes involving a threat of physical violence are often perpetrated with edged weapons, as firearms seen in public are (by default) believed to be toys by the public at large. ..."

Also, heard some rumors from folks (Navy) who had spent some time in Japan...

I have shot these air soft guns and some do shoot very hard. Though they may shoot large projectiles they are light weight construction. I believe the BB's that are metal are usually made of aluminum. HSO another interesting link is BBMACHINEGUN.COM. You may have to go to google first to find. You will see on this site FULL AUTO BB and AIRSOFT equipment and several other links relating to these. I still believe you would be better off with pepper spray or a ball bat than shooting someone with a bb gun.
Jim
Oh, by the way I have one of the DROZDS. They are a ball to play around with.

General BB size is 6mm, which is about the same as the end of a #2 pencil eraser

Airsoft BB's are made of plastic, heavy ones are made of plastic with graphite polished over them... .88gram aluminums are 6mm but not intended for shooting your freinds... any other metal 6mm is really bad for the brass barrels of modern guns.

the original gas/CO2 highpower guns are no longer in manufacture, I have yet to see an electric gun fire more than 450fps with a .2 projectile without crushing itself. But there are gas rifles out there that will do 700fps max (JASG tolerances) before they blow up

All japanse airsoft manufacturers are a part of an airsoft association(JASG), whilst Cantonese and Taiwanese manufacturers are a part of another association(ASKG). They have VERY tough laws in asia regarding airsoft, in japan upgrades for most guns are heavily controlled and they seem to be manufactured solely for export to asia, europe, and the US.

One company called Digicon (these guys make the STRAIGHT brand bb's like the .88's, which are very bad for your gun) is not a part of the airsoft association of japan, they've been known to create guns that'll take unregulated CO2 and have been used in a few vandalism crimes all over japan.

Only one airsoft gun has been recorded capable to convert to real ammunition (.22LR). And it's the Asahi M700/M40 (rare mod, M24) series. Of course, the conversion kits were made by an American company and when the japanese found out, they rounded up every registered gun and tossed them into a big furnace. Only 25 or so known peices still exist in the world today. The action was extremely realistic like the real counterparts, stocks would fit without modification, bolts would fit without modification.

can you spot the tell-tale sign?
Mk23under.jpg
the real Mk23 doesnt have it

To the point though- I'd be running away if anyone pointed any gun-shaped object at me, the range guy had a fun time figuring out why this Mk23 had a nozzle instead of an ejector. Why? 1:1 look, feel, weight, racking it sounds realistic, and 1/5th the price tag- and I still get a KAC supressor and LAM unit.

home defense

get in the practice of using throwing knifes.you stand a better chance of not getting robbed or raped as fast as you would with plastic guns:D

I am currently taking an unarmed SD class with a former student of Rex Applegate. This guy is a veteran streetfighter. I asked him about the effectiveness of this silly idea, and he told me something I already knew about but have luckily never experienced. When someone gets into a fight, he or she has chemicals released into the brain which boost energy, and more importantly get rid of pain. He joins me in believing that anything less than a .40 is a lousy idea.

The bottom line is that while most of us have been hit by airsoft guns and know that they hurt, sometimes a lot, they will do absolutely nothing in stopping a fight unless you can get somebody to believe its a real gun. After all, airsofts can't even break the skin, much less disrupt the central nervous system.

Well what if you paint a 'Spork' black and use that as a back up for the airsoft gun? The last resort is I guess you could strangle them with the house dogs collor or a lamp cord. Better yet train the dog to pee on their shoes.

only way i see a airsoft being used with any chance of helping a fight is if you have a second person using the full auto airsoft and they open up on the intruders face right before you go in with a hand weapon. as a distraction only.

If you cant legally own a gun, get one of these

http://www.knightsedge.com/japanese-samurai-swords.htm

My best friend owns several of them including the 6 foot Odachi, thats one helluva sword.

Cool thing about Ritter steel is they are fully functional swords, not wallhangers. Made out of Carbon steel these are meant for blade to blade contact. You must oil them and keep them in thier scabbards most of the time to protect the blades, but when the ???? hits the fan you can depend on these as they were meant for what a sword is supposed to be used for, physical contact. Again, not a wallhanger like most fleamarket and ebay swords are.

Just my 2 cents. My best friend has em all over the place and so theres a legitmate sword within reach. He wont buy a firearm, but he loves his swords. I sure as hell wouldn't want a stab wound from one of these any more than being shot with any kind of ammo round. People laugh at the .22 lr being hardly anything but when push comes to shove, would you like being hit with one, I know I sure wouldn't. If thats all you have, its better than nothing. Its gonna hurt more than a 6mm plastic BB. Just like his swords are gonna hurt more than that 6mm BB too.

Just food for thought, and they are beautiful pieces of craftsmanship. You should consider one if you just cannot have a firearm. Im just glad I have my 9mm JHP's for just in case :)

a credible cite for the Yakuza information

Since wikipedia allows anyone to post information, without proving any form of credential, it cannot be considered a legitimate source.

John

John,

I didn't reply to MGG's "cite" since there was nothing reply to yet. The Wikipedia reference doesn't say anything at all about airsoft having actually been modified to shoot "more effective rounds". The Wikipedia reference only said the Japanese gov had regulated so that there was no possibility of airsoft replicas being modified to serve as lethal weapons.

Obviously "some rumors from folks (Navy) who had spent some time in Japan" isn't worth the bandwidth used to transmit it.

We still don't have a credible cite and I don't expect one.

John,

I think I need to hurt Peter

I do hope you mean the "good" father instead of self abuse.:neener:

I'm personally amazed that this whole silly thread has gone on and on. I've been shot with airsoft and simunition. Airsoft doesn't even come close to comparing with simunition in creating pain and some small level of shock that unprotected simunition hits provide. Heck, I've even got a simuniton scar from a lucky hit on my left hand (yes, people do shoot at the gun under stress). With this personal experience I wouldn't consider simunition to ever be an effective self defense tool (except as a diversion/distraction). Airsoft certainly not.
