How accurate is your AR-15?

This is about the only time I've shot mine. 600yds. 77grSMK. 50 second firing period. Colt HBAR upper built into a Service Rifle by yours truly.

2MOA on all of them

2" @ 100 yrds with iron sights on one (just confirming no-wind zero last week)
1" at 50 yrds with an aimpoint T1 on another (when sighting it in from prone last year)
consistent hits on 10" steel plate at 500 yrds with an ACOG on a third (most sundays)

of course, i haven't cleaned any of them in the last year... i need to get around to doing that soon :)

rock river

My rock river 16" chrome lined is more accurate than I could have hoped for. Last week I shot two 3 shot groups in the same hole at 100 yards with some 62 grain pulled ss109 tipped handloads. Ramshot powder. I was VERY excited to say the least. In fact I think I jumped up and down and started doing a little Irish jig there in the middle of the range. Stupidly I didn't keep the target because my buddy shot it up with his .22 lr afterward. Needless to say I think I found my "sugar" load.

Target I shot with my Service Rifle competition gun while at my regular club range. 80gr SMK, 24.0gr RL15, Lapua (virgin), and CCI BR4. I had to shoot up this ammo so I could reload the batch of 100. This was from prone supported (sling). I think it was a 2.120" group edge to edge.

Unfortunately, my rifle isn't as accurate while standing. Here's a 10 shot string shot at 200 meters, standing, unsupported, last Saturday at my club's range:

Darn gun can't even hold the 10-ring in standing...

These targets were shot at 100yds. 5-shot group, ammo type is marked on the targets. Grid squares are 1". Upper is a Bushmaster upper with a Lilja 1:8 stainless barrel. I am definitely the limiting factor in these groups (shot prone, and off the bench with a Grippod and rifle case for support and a 3.5x donut ACOG as the sight).

(The "Oops" is not a flyer; but where I started on the wrong diamond when shooting before the spotter stopped me - the downside of a 3.5x scope and my eyes at 100yds)

I am almost ashamed of mine after seeing all you guys great groups, but here is one I shot today:

9 shots in less than an inch, and even with the one I dropped (that I called by the way) it is still only 1.220. This was a measured 100 yards with my bull barreled (16 inch) AR with Rock River Arms 2 stage National Match trigger.

Simply put... my AR's are more accurate than I am. I have two Bushmasters... a 20" HB Bushie, and a 20" .308 Bushie.

My flat-top AR-15 was built up by several gunsmiths from a Colt receiver. It had never been a full scale commercial rifle at any time. It's main goal was/is being a varmint rifle for the rougher parts of South Dakota where banging up a nice rifle is a real possibility.

First off, I ordered a 1:9 twist, and I never meant to fire any great quantites of commercial hardball. In fact, if the rifle wasn't grouping, I would just do additional research for a better handload. My rifle seems to like a 52-grain V-Max bullet over A/A2230 that has been backed down a grain from a full-house load.

I'm more of a beer can shooter than a guy who keeps old paper targets.

I will say this, we all know the size of the little blue lid that comes atop a gallon milk jug.

Using the VarX II 3.5x10 scope I have, if I can see the lid at any distance, I can hit it (using my handload).

I'm kind of a beer can shooter like The Tourist describes. I will say one thing though, the S&W AR15 isn't that bad. Using a 3-9x32 optic, I'm able to drive empty 9mm cases into a board at about 50 yards. At 100 I can't see the empties very well :)

Two, 3-shot groups with scope adjustment at 268 lasered yards. Bushie Varminter. Loads are on the target. My rifle with son-in-law shooting.

Interesting thread....saw it in another site :D

I am in load development stage on my Bushy V Match. Been getting good results on loads using IMR4895 with 52gr sierra.
My rifle has the 1 in 9 twist...With this twist she should do very good with heavier bullets also???? I would assume...Going to test them soon...

Here are couple groups at 100yds with the 52gr sierra using IMR4895....

Nice shooting. :) I'm ten times more impressed by that group than I am a 5 shot group off the bench that can be covered by a quarter.

My results match those done by (Molon?) in the famous AR15.com thread "the trouble with 3-shot groups" ...

20" 1/7 chrome lined NATO chamber govt profile (BCM). It is free floated, using 75gr match.

That would be 1.25"-1.35" ...10 shot groups. That is fired from a bench with a scope. Non floated goes up to 1.75-2" groups.

For those that are brainwashed by internet mythology, that is fantastic accuracy for what is basically a service-grade military style assault rifle. Nearly MOA. Now ...I've shot many 1" and sub MOA 5-shot groups. Is it an MOA or sub-moa rifle/barrel? No way. That's why 10 shots is the ultimate measure, and to fire a few groups. See what it does consistently. That's the best it can do under optimal conditions.

For me, this is phenominal accuracy for a chrome lined autoloader. Assuming I can hold steady enough and compensate for wind/drop, it isn't out of rifle's capability to make a hit (body size target) out to 400m or more. That satisfies and exceeds the rifle's purpose/objective. And does so with handiness and reliability. I'm not a fan of tight chambered match-grade AR's for "defensive" use. I like chrome and a generous chamber. I can't do that with other platforms due to lack of accuracy (AK for example) or without spending outrageous amounts of money (HK). That's the beauty of it.

For varmint hunting or doing shooting sports, then the Krieger is the way to go. Yes, you do get what you pay for. That barrel absolutely performs. If you don't drive tacks with it, your ammo sucks or your shooting does.
