How anti-gun is the Daily Show?

I never stopped to think about it, but they're pretty bad that way. I remember watching the Thunder Ranch episode where Rob Cordry (I think) acted like a real jackass. But I turned on the TV the other day and caught the end of a show, and it was just a big montage of all the anti-gun pieces they've done. I didn't count, but there were more than a couple.

It kind of takes one aback when a show they felt was harmless is so full of hatred.

Does anyone know how many specifically anti-gun pieces they've done?

They hate the Flag. They hate President Cheney. They've had notorious liberals like Bill Kristol on the show. The probably deep fry cute little puppies and kittens live to eat in their Satanic rituals on the "holidays". :p

The Daily Show is a Comedy Show...

It is NOT news. They do their shows for entertainment value rather than any serious agenda. I'll admit that they are left leaning, but they are a Lot less biased than other "News" shows like "60 minutes". If they have been going after Republicans and Conservatives lately it is because the Rep/Cons have given them soo much material to work with. If you watch the show you will see that they also do some pretty good hack-jobs on liberals as well.

As far as the gun issue goes.... I have seen them use some blatant stereotypes of gun owners, but stereotypes are used all over the place to make jokes funny. I also have noticed that they also will insert cutting bits of sarcasm to tear down the anti-gun argument as well. However, The Daily Show is not the place to go for an accurate and informative expose.

I enjoy the Daily Show, John Stewart makes me laught; However, I think we would be much better suited to try and get fair portrayal of gun owners on 60 minutes or CNN.

If anyone agrees to be interviewed for the show or participate in any way, and they expect not to be made fun of, shame on them! It is a comedy show and a darn good one. Remember that the Colbert Report is just as bad!

Actually, the demographics that vote and watch the Daily Show probably don't watch 60 minutes.

I like the show, I think Colbert's a little funnier, because he always makes interviews fun.

But I've never seen D.S. use sarcasm to tear down an anti-gun argument. Me wonders if they don't receive enough complaint letters from gun owners:)

Seriously, it's a damning indictment of the infotainment that we call "news" these days. According to a recent study from (I think) University of Indiana Journalism schoo it seems that The Daily Show actually has more minutes of hard news per hour than the network news. :(

Some time ago on one of the shows John Stewart said something to the effect of: "A new study shows that 80% of people under 30 get their news from the Daily Show......DON'T DO THAT! WE MAKE IT UP!"
The show seems fairly liberal and anti at times but they basically make fun of everyone. It's just a comedy show.

Valhalla-gun town

I do not watch Comedy Central/Daily Show because it is not on my TV system.

I like the Daily Show and did not see it as anti-gun or slanted. I remember them airing a story about the training resort Valhalla and it seemed very +. I also saw a bit about a town or real estate development in NM or AZ that had all the residents using/carrying open sidearms. It looked like a joke but the Daily Show did not lampoon these people very much.

It was accually funnier to watch Cordray stumble out of the way when the guy cleared leather and shot at a bunch of targets. Or how inept he was with a Glock pistol at Valhalla.

These places know who the Daily Show is and what Comedy Central is like.

Like I say from time to time; "If you can't laugh at yourself, someone else will."

Rusty :D

I used to really like that show but I had to stop watching it in 2004. It descended into nonstop liberal propaganda for the entire show, and it got painful to watch. Not funny anymore.

Yes, I saw John Stewart's anti-gun pieces, but that's OK because they were upfront about it. They don't feign objectivity or "fairness" while covertly slipping in anti-2nd Amen agit-prop.

I don't remember them going to Thunder Ranch... but it's not a bad place to be confused with...;). If I'm wrong, someone let me know, I'd love to see that piece too!

At any rate, when they called me to do the piece at Valhalla, I told them very specifically that they could do it if they were making fun of us having a world class training center at a world class luxury resort.. because that IS funny from a lot of perspectives. They specifically agreed not to make fun of guns, people who own them or personal defense directly.

I believe that they held up there end of the bargain and a "fun" experience with guns was shared with over 6 million people who would never read an article about me or Valhalla in SWAT Mag or watch me on Personal Defense TV.

dm1333 makes an obvious point.. it is COMEDY.. they make fun of things.... How many of you have ever made fun of a gun or a shooter or an instructor or a magazine article about guns, etc, etc... that doesn't automatically make you anti-gun. (does it???)

They have re-run the segment no fewer than 12 times over the past 2 years and everytime they do, we get business. Most of that business is people who have never shot before and enjoy shooting for the first time here at Valhalla.

Cordry himself was actually as decent shot. You can see that in some of the footage, those are his holes in the targets and his weapons handling on the ranges (as can be seen in the video) was very safe.

So, while there are no doubt some anti-gun types at The Daily Show, the piece they did on Valhalla has definitely brought people to shooting who probably would not otherwise have tried it.

The Daily Show along with Colbert are classic examples of the blending of news and entertainment. It has reached the point now where you cannot distinguish the two without serious effort. I have no problem with comedy and satire but many people base decisions on life on what they see and hear from shows such as this. That is the truly scary part. The "bread and circus" mentality is creeping into every facet of society. A news cast that simply
stated the facts regarding the occurences of the day would not last a week in the ratings. Too many people feel they "need" to be entertained even by
the news. This makes the electronic media suspect. They can no longer be trusted to be objective.

I believe the Daily Show does have a slight liberal bias, but they rip on both sides pretty well. For the last several years they have been hitting the Republicans the hardest because they basically were making all of the decisions, but that didn't stop them from throwing out "Look at these Democrats, they are so damn incompetent" pieces. I think with more Democratic power there will be more blunders and gaffes for them to mock.

I also agree that the Daily Show at least admits it has an agenda, unlike all the "News" channels. It seems to be degenerating back to the old "He said-She Said."

"Did you hear John Brown got killed in when plowing his field? What a tragedy!"

"John Brown got pulled under his plow. Nice guy, even if he did hit the bottle too much. I heard he was drinking before he went out to turn the field. Damn shame."

"John Brown's got killed when he was plowing. Say it was an accident but I swear it isn't. That field always has rocks turning up in it so one of the guys usually rides on the fender or the tractor so he can jump out and pick them up. John's brother Joe was driving, and you know how well them two get along, well Joe lent some money to John and he blew it betting on poker at Jimmy's. I'd bet you that snake Ed ran his brother over."

"You hear Joe Brown is suing Ed Smith for libel?"

I totally forgot the show they did at Valhalla. Some valid points here about people not being able to differentiate between entertainment and hard news but I wouldn't blame the entertainment industry for that.

You are right, it's not really the fault of the entertainement industry that the average citizen treats them like infallible royalty at times. Just another example of the divergence of species. Homo sapiens vs homo stupidicus.

I am in agreement with fabulousfink here I have been watching the daily show since it aired and overall its a big joke granted with real news but overall a joke. John Stewart however is pretty intelligent and overall a little left leaning but in my opinion he is really more of what conservatives should be.

I remember when they interviewed John Stewart on 60 minutes, they asked him about covering the democratic national convention, he said, "When you think about it, we were the only ones who really had a good reason to be there at all. It's not like it was a REAL convention!"

It is the job of these people to make sure thos in power don't start to take themselves too seriously. They didn't invent satire. It's not like they stop poking fun when a Democrat is in office. They are non-partisan a-holes. They are STILL getting mileage out of Bill and Hilary. And it's not like they are all the same. I remember cringing when Dennis Miller cracked "This week the 15 round magazine ban in California was approved by every 16th person.", but look at him now. Being critical and poking fun at government is an attribute of a healthy free people. Don't fear people who disagree with you. Fear comedians who disagree with you less. Their main concern is comedy, not politics.

The Daily Show is not a blend of comedy and news. It is a comedy show which focuses on the news. I like the show. I assume Jon Stewert's politics are liberal, but he interviews many conservatives as well as liberals. And from my view, he always shows respect for his guests.

Were it not for Stewart and Colbert, Newton Minnow would still be 100% correct!

These two are The Best..they make me laugh and that's the best medicine for what ails ya!

Do you waste your time to view that crap?

Go out on the range and shoot!

Have a beautiful 2007 with money growing out of your pockets faster than you can spend it!

The show they did at Valhalla has to be my favorite of all time. FWIW, I thought Rob was pretty funny in that one, too. :D I've always wondered about that episode, how it came to be and what you guys at Valhalla thought about the way it was done. Thanks for telling the story, Rob! :)

Oh... yeah... I like the Daily Show too. They make fun of everyone equally, IMO... good stuff.
