How big a difference does having certain types of firearms make?

We can remain skeptical and questioning of our governments, its institutions and its agents without using that as an excuse to be disrespectful across the board to the people who put it on the line for us.

True...

My take is that it would have only lasted a few hours here. The police initially would be overwhelmed and then from there would re-position with the help of other agencies...

It's always easy to complain AFTER the shooting that you should have had better guns. The police being out gunned is hardly unique to India. (The North Hollywood shootout comes to mind. Beslan too.) It's really more about underestimating the imminence of the threat than being properly armed. They had Enfields, which while older than the rifles WE might use, have practical application in this case for precision fire. They had FALs, which I frankly would LOVE to be carrying in this battle. It's really a question of being adequately prepared to deploy them all correctly. They were overwhelmed by the crisis, and if they had a plan to deploy in an organized manner, it fell apart. To wish I had an M-4 with my preferred gadgets would really be splitting hairs. If I were a tourist trapped in the battle, and I saw a FAL OR an Enfield lying there to be picked up, I would weep with joy.

mbt2001,

That would be my prediction as well.

mljdeckard,

I can't argue with your assessment. As to weeping for joy...absolutely. I just hope all those grateful tears wouldn't spoil our aim.

Respects to both of you,

If you read the comments, I think you will see most Euro's think "outgunned and this is dispicable" most american think "they should have been able to make due, maybe not trained well enough to use their guns / tactics properly."
On that note, the SWAT team at Virginia Tech wasn't outgunned.

I am surprised that no one has made more of the fact that the indian police didn't have radio's and reloads and the uniforms are easily imitated.
