How can they do this legally on shows like Auction Hunters?

In most states you can buy or sell a gun to or from anyone you please. You don't need an FFL or any legal paperwork whatsoever to do so. The local bulletin board at my grocery always has guns for sale and so do the classifieds in the local paper. I've bought and sold them many times through such means.

If this show is filmed in California, well that's a different story. Most of us don't live in authoritarian states that regulate gun sales between private citizens.

Nope.
That "anyone you please" had better be a resident of your state.
Federal law allows residents of the same state to buy/sell/gift/acquire/trade/dispose of a firearm without need for an FFL.

A resident of Texarkana, Texas cannot buy/sell/gift/trade/acquire/dispose of a firearm with a resident of Texarkana, Arkansas and vice versa.

Actually you can
there are technicalities and it has to be a long gun, but you can sell a long gun to a out of state person.

OR you sell it and send it to a ffl in their state, but
YOU CAN

The ATF disagrees. Do that and it's a Federal crime.

Q: To whom may an unlicensed person transfer firearms under the GCA?A person may sell a firearm to an unlicensed resident of his State, if he does not know or have reasonable cause to believe the person is prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms under Federal law. A person may loan or rent a firearm to a resident of any State for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes, if he does not know or have reasonable cause to believe the person is prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms under Federal law. A person may sell or transfer a firearm to a licensee in any State. However, a firearm other than a curio or relic may not be transferred interstate to a licensed collector.

Q: From whom may an unlicensed person acquire a firearm under the GCA?A person may only acquire a firearm within the person’s own State, except that he or she may purchase or otherwise acquire a rifle or shotgun, in person, at a licensee’s premises in any State, provided the sale complies with State laws applicable in the State of sale and the State where the purchaser resides. A person may borrow or rent a firearm in any State for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes.

That wasn't the situation.....the post was regarding face to face transfers between "private citizens" as opposed to transfers from a licensed dealer.
