How do I tell what choke my Franchi 48AL has?

There should be no stack of washers on a stock 48 AL. Starting at the receiver, there should be:
1. recoil spring
2. steel "governor" ring with one beveled edge (facing forward for heavier loads, facing the spring for lighter loads).
3. Brass "friction ring" with a split in it, surrounded by a blued or black steel ring with a split in it. The steel outer ring should be able to be slid off of the brass ring, and both slid off of the mag tube.

The governor ring is available from numrich (google it) but the friction rings in 12 ga are sold out IIRC.

If your gun won't cycle with the brass friction ring in place, I'm wondering if you might have the "magnum" recoil spring, and/or if your action is gummed up. Have you cleaned'/oiled the action spring behind the bolt?

Here's a how-to with pics fyi

Hmm, I guess those instructions are lacking some info, because I can't 'slide the bolt handle out of the bolt body' The bolt handle moves about an eighth of an inch, but that's it. Kind of wisht he'd have mentioned you want the bolt closed before removing the trigger group.

I've got some pics of what's in the area under the forearm on mine if I can mail 'em to somebody to post. Photobucket is really difficult to use on a smartphone for posts here...

I also have trouble re-assembling. the bolt always catches on the barrel hood and won't mate properly no matter how hard I push.

bump. Still looking to see if anyone can tell me anymore as related to 48AL. Does it make any sense that adding more components would make it cycle light (3dr.) loads? That seems counter-intuitive to me, but I'm not an authority when it comes to long-recoil actions. I may have found a friction spring and governor ring.

bump again, other than myself and the OP, anyone else have a 48AL? Of those has anyone disassmebled the bolt? Of those has the bolt handle 'slid out' without doing something other than pushing on it?

Anyone know enough about long recoil actions to say how I'd go about tuning this thing to cycle?
