How people shoot themselves?

For example, I can see only three possible scenarios. 1) Striker malfunction, 2) handling gun improperly, 3) external factors like somebody else grabbing a gun while its in the holster.

Are there any other possible scenarios?

Followed by being on the trigger without the intent of putting a hole in where the weapon is aimed at. Actually, the overwhelming majority of self inflicted gunshot wounds I have been involved with have been intentional. Oddly enough all of the non self-inflicted gunshot wounds I have been invloved with have been intentional as well.

I think that in 99.999% of the cases of accidental self shooting, the individual would eagerly bet you $1,000,000, right before the accident, that their chamber was empty.

Not securing their weapon and having it handled by an unqualified person or animal, although technically that's not shooting yourself in that case, although it is your fault.

Rule #8: no matter how responsible he seems, never give your gun to a monkey.

are you asking how someone can be that stupid(in the case of accidental self shootings), what someone is thinking when they do it on purpose, or just the sheer mechanics of how to do it?

If it is the last one, it is as simple as point barrel at self, pull trigger. The other two may be unanswerable, and if they aren't they will be much longer answers than anyone can post in one post on here.

Some of these accidents happen to trained professionals. What is it that makes one complacent? Could it be that they are getting used to handling guns so much that the process becomes automatic to the point where memory can plays tricks on a person? How do you prevent that from happening?

Umm-

OK. You have weapon X that you just

Laid down 20 minutes ago.

Pick it up.

Drop the clip or,

If similar to a pump shotgun,

Shuck the ammo until you have a clear chamber.

The point is, is the chamber clear?

Whether revolver, semi, rifle or shotgun of whatever sort.

If you do not do this then you are on the road

Of accidental discharge.

And I can't help you there.

whew!!! thank god I have only been drinking whiskey all night. With the access I have to guns in my own home, if I had been drinking beer I would have shot myself already.

Welcome new steyr1!

Guns do not accidentally go off as people claim, it is almost always because somebody put finger to trigger without engaging their brain.

If you are not aware of the "4 rules of gun safety" here they are. Strict and fanatical adherence to these rules will prevent any accidental ventilation of people or property.

1. Assume that All guns are always loaded (until you establish whether they are or not).
2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy. Keep your gun pointed in a safe direction at all times: on the range, at home, loading, or unloading.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target (and you are ready to shoot).
4. Be sure of your target. Know what it is, what is in line with it and what is behind it. Never shoot at anything that you haven't positively identified.

Holster malfunctions and unsafe holster designs, such as the accidents with the Blackhawk Serpa holsters.

They didn't keep their booger hook off the bang switch until the gun was pointed at something they wanted to shoot.

It starts with a round of schnapps.

Wait... let's check that brand....

All joking aside, I think a accidential bang is covered by another safety rule... always point gun in safe direction.

Now there are some for fighting and some for fun....
