How do people shoot themselves?

Well, the best way to make sure that doesn't happen is to drop the mag, eject the chambered round, then decock.

Trying to decock using the hammer like you see in the movies is a quick way to a catastrophe.

Same goes with a revolver. If it is cocked, before dropping the hammer, open the cylinder, then let the hammer down.

That's what I do. I'm just throwing it out there as a possibility as to how somebody could shoot themselves accidentally (or negligently).

Only complete idiots shoot themselves!! Nothing accidental about it, but negligence and total disreguard for firearm safety. Don't give me any of that " nobody's perfect" or " accidents happen" crap!

Accidentally dropping a firearm and then instinctively catching it. Happens all the time. Firing ranges and at home. It's sorta hard to practice that out of your head. That's why I prefer an XD or a Glock.

Ouch!
What an unfortunate faux pas to make in front of all those kids.

Lucky the silly sod shot himself and didn't pop one of those rugrats. I'm surprised the school allowed them to bring live ammo onto the premises. I guess they figured a professional such as himself would never do something foolish. :)

Please realize you sound very angry, very sarcastic, and very inane!

What is your problem?

the best I have ever heard it put it as follows.. if you handle guns on a regular basis.. loading, unloading, shooting, cleaning, working on, cocking, uncocking... etc.. at some point the liklihood of a gun shooting is similar to the that of dropping a motorcycle... not a matter of if but when...

I will admit I have been an idiot once or twice.

I have never shot myself or anyone else but I have done some pretty stupid stuff. I Shot a hole in a bathroom wall with a 1911 once by accident.

Accidents happen because people make mistakes. I think a person claiming they will never make a firearm safety mistake must be an android or a terminatrix.

Accidents do sometimes happen even to the best people; that is why rule #2 is of utmost importance! If you keep it pointed in a safe direction, hopefully the only thing your ND will hurt is your ego.

Some of the accidents happen to professionals with many hours of training. I'm simply trying to better myself by learning from other peoples mistakes.

Reminds me of the line, "We are the only one's professional enough..." Really though, it is NOT an accident, it is negligence. Big difference in the two.

The mistake was not following the 4 rules. It really is that simple.

I agree with those who cite complacency. I do believe some accidents happen because the individuals do not know & understand firearm safety. The rest I would say are complacency. Working in the construction industry for close to 20 years I have safety pounded into my head again & again. The thing you have to watch out for is getting too used to the danger. If you are in a dangerous situation you may be a little more aware & on edge the first few hours or days you work in that circumstance. After a couple of weeks of working in that situation you get where you don't think about the danger. Thats when it's easy to get careless. It's not something I"m proud of but I almost walked myself right into a 6 story drop one time because I was being careless. I had a safety harness on but my lanyard wasn't hooked off. I just got into a hurry trying to get done. If the guy working with me hadn't yelled at me I would have been gone. It's the same with firearms-gotta stay out of the doing things out of habit without thinking mode.

There have been some slam-fires with the SKS rifle, and according to
"the Sacramento Bee", a guy died at a range when his slam-fired with several rounds in the chamber.

I can't quite picture how he held the rifle (or had it in on a bench) in a way that allowed the muzzle to rise enough for the last round to hit him.

Very well put MikeJ.

new_steyr1 if you can do this while handling guns and following the 4 rules, you will be a good way toward your goal.
